    1. Without having read that particular article, I think it is worth mentioning that there are broad swaths of the Republican party that aren't in the least afraid of change. These include Trump's base and the Tea Party.

    2. That's about what I have been thinking, Susan. Put another way: "Get on board or get out of the way." This week's elections might move things along a bit--I sure hope so.

There was a substantial wind last night, with lower temperatures, a light breeze and clearer air today. But looking directly north—where we can see a good fifty miles on a clear day—there is a substantial bank of smoke obscuring the horizon.

I am preparing to renew my driver’s license on Wednesday, well before I must, to avoid scheduling problems in September. Being over 70 I must renew in person rather than by mail—written test and vision test required. In addition I will be upgrading to a REAL ID compliant driver’s license so I won’t need my passport for domestic air travel.

  6. Might not be except that my office, with its heat-generating equipment, faced west. And I'm not allowed to have the window open because it's next to Marc's bedroom and the noise might bother him.

    2. Conrad is pretty heavy stuff, as memory serves me. I partly recall the impression that Heart of Darkness made on me, although I don't recall the story line; and I am pretty sure I also read--or started to read--some of his short fiction. LMM ought to be a contrast. Your tastes in literature are definitely catholic! I salute you.

  10. Ah, that room wants for an air conditioner. We're getting more and more days when one is needed. Sadly. I moved to Vermont because I like it cool. We're going to get a heating/cooling pump installed this next
year, which we'll run off solar.

  11. I thought the smoke looked worse this eventide than it did at midday, and I was right. I was setting out for my evening walk, took a couple breaths of the outside air, and came back inside.
