  1. I'm deeply saddened by the wildfires, Alan, the deaths and the immense losses.

My daughter-in-law is finally on the mend. We have ascertained that she had a sinus infection, then had a reaction to being in the sun while on a powerful antibiotic. As long as she stays out of the sun, she's getting better. Hurrah!

And son (aka Youngest) got home tonight (from the Coding Conference in California where he and his team won a tech contest!) . He barely made his connecting flight, but running from one end of the airport to the other end (at Detroit) did the deed. =WHEW!!!=

    1. All's well that ends well. For what it's worth (probably not a lot, certainly not at this time), the herbal nasal spray I found seems to have cured a decades-long sinus infection of some sort, and some users report it curing fungal sinus infections precipitated by antibiotics and/or steroids. Others' mileage may vary.

Yes, the advertising sounds like snake oil; but it seems to be the real deal.

JJ Litke blog discussion[Click] This is what convinced me to give it a try. (My doctor recommended steroid nasal spray for a pernicious cough I had had; I didn’t like the idea unless there was no satisfactory alternative, so I went looking online.) I still use it a from time to time to deal with poor air quality and post-nasal drip, but I don’t use up one handkerchief a week now; for decades—I can ’t remember how long, but decades—I used up about three per week.

Others’ mileage may vary, but for me it is money very well spent.

  2. Trump’s Bunker Mentality[Click] Puts me in mind of Nixon’s last days as President, it does. How does this end? I recall a line from a play (I forget which one) by George Bernard Shaw: “Give a good man a pistol and one bullet, and he knows what to do.” Trump wouldn’t. Are they going to have to call in the psychiatric emergency technicians and cart him off to the looney bin in a straitjacket?

    1. If only!

My copy of the book The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President is arriving next Tuesday and I am thinking it will be a good book to read while on the elliptical, so I can work of the angst as I read. It's by Bandy X. Lee (Author), with 27+ contributors including Robert Jay Lifton and Gail Sheehy.

    2. Some eighty-six proof therapy might be effective. Dang, I miss having a drink once in a while; but doing without is probably a very good idea at my age. Risk of falls and all that. And incompatible (albeit not completely) with the statin I am now taking.

Garum rides again![Click] The Romans used it like Americans use ketchup and Chinese use soy sauce. It may be the ancestor (via Indian intermediation) of Worstershire sauce. The best was said to come from Iberia.

    From the short article:

"Kim of course is forbidden by patient privacy law to identify which specific lawmakers are struggling with this severe form of dementia, and can only speak generally.

Today’s Congress is one of the oldest in our nation’s history. The average age in the Senate is 61, with the average in the House of Representatives right behind at 57. More than half of the U.S. senators running for reelection in 2018 will be over 65. President Trump is 71.

    2. What next? How about THIS? [Click] The GOP is sure going to own that one, IF it comes to pass. And how about NAFTA? If the fool takes us out of NAFTA, there would be 25% tariffs on beef, 45% on turkey and some dairy, and 75% on chicken, potatoes and high fructose corn syrup exports to Mexico under EXISTING rates that predate NAFTA. (From the NYT, quoted in our local newspaper.) This after he gave away US export opportunities in East and Southeast Asia--beef, dairy, etc. Those farmers and ranchers are just going to LOVE that stuff. It might help to undo some of the damage to Mexican agriculture and society that was precipitated by NAFTA, but that will take a very long time. There might just be a wave election coming up.
