The Real Rosie

For many decades, the woman who inspired the Rosie the Riveter poster was misidentified as Geraldine Hoff Doyle.  However, Naomi Parker-Fraley is the REAL Rosie, and this wasn't known until last year when she turned 95.

  1. So Rosie the Riveter was actually Naomi the Turret Lathe Operator? Her work clothes look nice, but not very safe. But workplace safety practices left something to be desired in those days. Thanks for the tip!

    1. Precisely, Alan. And she/they worked hard for this nation in our time of need.

  2. Alan, I am so sad for all the smoke there in the west. Do you have any rain in sight? We have experienced Canadian fires here at times too, and rain can help wash the grit out of the sky. Better yet, rain on the fires would help.

In the midst of watching Hurricane Irma closely (as it is expected to become a Category 4 (or more) hurricane and is grazing dangerously close to the Lesser Antilles and SW USA), Weather Underground is still featuring the western fires this morning.

    1. No prospect of rain anytime soon, listener; a significant cold front blowing through is the best we can hope for at this time of year. But this morning is actually cool. The sky is completely obscured, be it by smoke, clouds or both I cannot tell. Quite possibly it is smoke--there is not a breath of wind (7:40 AM now). I had planned to pull some weeds as soon as possible, but there doesn't seem to be any rush. Not a day for heavy exercise and deep breathing, though. The air quality has been exceptionally bad lately. And of course the large numbers of diesel trucks that carry so much of the commerce (both for California and other states) through this area must keep running. The higher nighttime temperatures during recent years cause forest and brush fires to keep burning vigorously at night, whereas before they would die back. BUT!!--on the bright side, even if all the glaciers in the world should melt, including Greenland and ALL of Antarctica, and the oceans should rise by thermal expansion, we still won't have beachfront property here. Ironically yours,

      Alan

  3. Here in Vermont today we are experiencing the last vestiges of Harvey, with constant rain, some wind and cooler temps. The cool will be quickly followed by tropical air, but only to the tune of 77-79F, which is easy by OUR standards and must seem positively chilly to Alan and others in the west.

  4. Is there some cosmic law that decrees that the mail on Friday must always bring bad news you can't do anything about until the following week? I got a summons for jury duty. I was told by a friend a while back that you were exempt after age 70. Well, they've raised the age to 76 so I'm stuck. I am not at all happy and I don't give a flying - - - about doing my civic duty. Don't want to.

    1. Susan, there are probably all sorts of reasons you can advance for not doing jury duty. Give it some calm thought and be ready to marshal your reasons on Monday, or Tuesday, since this is a long holiday weekend.

  5. Per Weather Underground's prediction for Fresno,

"Today is forecast to be COOLER than yesterday." [Emphasis in original.]

High yesterday 116F (27% humidity, "feels like 121F"), at the moment (not quite the hottest time of day) it is 111F. They say it got up to 106F in San Francisco on Friday--people must be dying there in such heat, and them unprepared for it.

I was weeding (also moved a couple of iris) this morning from 9:15 to 11:30 , and I think that is enough outside work for today. When I came in I commented to Artist*Daughter visiting from the SF Bay Area that although it was hot there was a little breeze, she jokingly replied "Yeah, if you consider a wall of heat a breeze!"

    1. Hmmm....that got a bit garbled--couldn't be because my brains are fried? Better:

  6. During the war, my dad and his two brothers bought new houses next to each other. My uncles worked at Hill Field, so they were eligible for loans. My dad, fighting in the Pacific, was not--my mother had to get a job in a war industry so we could get a loan. She went to work for Purity Biscuit, making cookies (food production). She had an outfit like Rosie's, including the scarf worn just that way. (Different print, though)

    1. A man fighting for his country was not eligible for a loan? that seems bass ackwards, but very bureaucratic.

    1. That reminds me of the theory that the reforestation of the Americas secondary to their depopulation by imported diseases [Click] in the 16th-17th centuries caused the Little Ice Age by sequestration of carbon dioxide.

    2. Which in turn reminds me that the forested area of the eastern US has been mostly restored (by the elimination of small farms around cities), and the trees are spreading westward because of increased soil moisture. Before I flew to DC many years ago, I hadn't realized how much of that area was wooded; but it was obvious that the woodlands were not well managed--lots of scrub and thicket where usable trees could have been grown. Much of the land looked tired.
