  1. listener--a question occurred to me that you ought to be able to answer; it's just to satisfy idle curiosity.

I remember when I was young riding in the WWII surplus truck my folks had to bring in supplies for our general store. It had a gasoline heater (I can remember a pickup with one also). When it was turned on it was hot immediately, and it could produce a lot more heat than regular automobile heaters (which in those days were probably pretty poor compared those of today). I suppose it was intended for places with really cold winters. So if there were such things around now, a Vermonter should know of them. Seen or heard of any in your neck of the woods?

    1. I believe you are speaking about a radiant heater vs catalytic?

At any rate, the main reason they never caught on was the explosive nature of gasoline in an enclosed space.

  2. What I wanna know is:
Why would a member of the Armed Services Committee meet with the Russian Ambassador on the sidelines of the Republican Convention?

  5. Hallo! We're off in the morning to visit Mah*Sweetie's sister on Nantucket. Back Sunday evening. Our son will be staying here while we're gone, to take care of the kitties. So no need to send Sheriff Chuck. ;-)

I can only hope big things happen in DC while I'm away. Ha! I got a letter from Pat Leahy today and he is definitely pushing for Sessions to appoint a special counsel. I would like to see the dude step down as well, which Peter Welch is calling for. I haven't even had time to find out what Bernie's saying, but I trust it's similar.

Sleep well, everyone! Especially you, Susan! ♥

    1. PS: It will be 22F with wind blowing 25-35mph, but we're going on a Snowy Owl Safari (four of us) way out on Great Point. (Google it.) It will probably be more car-birding than anything.

  6. One more:

A scientist named Grace Ann gave permission to share this...

I just saw a transphobic post that was like, "In a sexual species, females have two X chromosomes and males have an X and a Y, I'm not a bigot it's just science." I'm a science teacher, so I commented this:

First of all, in a sexual species, you can have females be XX and males be X (insects), you can have females be ZW and males be ZZ (birds), you can have females be females because they developed in a warm environment and males be males because they developed in a cool environment (reptiles), you can have females be females because they lost a penis sword fighting contest (some flatworms), you can have males be males because they were born female, but changed sexes because the only male in their group died (parrotfish and clownfish), you can have males look and act like females because they are trying to get close enough to actual females to mate with them (cuttlefish, bluegills, others), or you can be one of thousands of sexes (slime mold, some mushrooms.) Oh, did you mean humans? Oh ok then. You can be male because you were born female, but you have 5-alphareductase deficiency and so you grew a penis at age 12. You can be female because you have an X and a Y chromosome but you are insensitive to androgens, and so you have a female body. You can be female because you have an X and a Y chromosome but your Y is missing the SRY gene, and so you have a female body. You can be male because you have two X chromosomes, but one of your X's HAS an SRY gene, and so you have a male body. You can be male because you have two X chromosomes- but also a Y. You can be female because you have only one X chromosome at all. And you can be male because you have two X chromosomes, but your heart and brain are male. And vice - effing - versa. Don't use science to justify your bigotry. The world is way too weird for that shit.
