Peace is first.
Over the weekend I read a Western called MacKenna's Gold, which I enjoyed. Published in 1963, it was a good yarn about the search for fabled Apache gold. The hero, Glenn MacKenna, is almost a caricature of Western heroes, he's such a straight arrow. The antagonist, Lopez, is much more interesting, being quite complex. He's not quite sympathetic, but neither is he a cardboard cutout bad guy. And the ending has just a bit of a twist.Come to find out, in 1969 a movie of the same name, though from the synopsis somewhat different storyline, came out with Gregory Peck at the head of a star studded cast. I gather Jose Feliciano provided the music. Who knew? You learn all sorts of things looking books up on Library Thing.
A couple of weeks ago, I read my first ever Terry Pratchett, The amazing Maurice and his educated rodents, a delightful children's book. It has it's darker moments, but a great read. Highly recommended. If all the Discworld books are as good as this one, I can certainly see why they are so popular.
The weather is crazy and scary all over the place. I've been reading about snowfall not only across this country but across central and southern Europe as well. For all I know unusual snow and rain events are happening in other parts of the world as well, I just am not tuned in to that. Scary. Daya think it might all be, like, you know, a portent or something? :P
Awwwww.Y'know it seems it would have been far easier to simply make the road go around the tree. Sigh.
Oh, that was a well-known type of 19th-Century tourist attraction; I think the Wawona Tunnel Tree [Click] was the largest, or at least best known. A stage coach could pass right through, to convey how huge the trees were.--Alan
I spent a big chunk of my day tending VT*Grandson and his adorable little sister, VT*Grandbaby (who is now VT*GrandToddler, I guess! Ha!). They are soooooo wonderful!!! When I arrived, both were asleep. Mama (heading off to work as a first employee of a new startup that offers art experiences to children! She is an art teacher) said that she anticipated the little one would sleep a long time and the older one wouldn't sleep long at all. Turned out the other way around. Ha! Little girl woke up and I wasn't sure how she'd take seeing Grammie instead of Mama. BIG SMILE!! Same with big brother. After awhile, he asked where Mama was and I told him and he was fine with that. We'll be doing this every Monday afternoon for awhile. Then we switch to ALL DAY Tuesdays, possibly straight through Summer, and that will be a much bigger challenge. But, oh, I love them both so much!! ♡ ♡
Our rainstorm didn't amount to as much as was anticipated, but there will be another one shortly. This morning the river looked to be about two feet higher than the day before.Alan

Nice to see you got some relief from all the drought, Alan! It's still sad that people didn't comprehend that they were harming the tree.
Cat, Edwin saw an article by those who study such things about how the Monarch's DNA was already changing because of climate change. And that was ten years ago. . . .
