  3. You know what really, *really* makes my blood boil? That Trump person and his followers using the term "Take our country back" or "Take America back!" Perhaps it's irrational, but that makes me spitting mad! They don't want to take our country back, they want to turn it into a nazi wet dream!

  4. The clowns directing the donkey. Highly appropriate.

  5. I have been thinking of a political cartoon showing a donkey in a tuxedo, relaxing in a wing chair with a cigar and sherry, maybe with an appropriate book or newspaper, saying something like "How did it go on the golf course?" to a battered elephant in golfing gear who has just entered the reading room from behind the donkey as a saw is cutting a circle out of the floor around the wing chair. Maybe the saw could have a label. There's a mob visible through the window, with a battering ram and a banner "DNC Convention and Bust!" Maybe the donkey could be reading a newspaper that has on the side we can see headlines like "BREXIT! CAMERON FLEES No. 10! PROLS WALLOP LABOUR, TORIES! REVOLUTION SPREADS TO WORLD! That's too much for one cartoon, probably.

    2. Thank you. The "Uprising in the Rust Belt" article linked below certainly echoes the north of England.

    3. Re corporate globalization article--dreadful reading. But even from its beginning, when Legazpi founded Manila in 1571, completing the commercial encirclement of the world and upsetting civilizations, economies, and ecosystems, globalization has left a lot to be desired.

    4. You have to strike a balance. That's what so few people seem to understand. You need local peace economies (to use the current buzz phrase), but you also need intercommunity and, gasp, international trade. But you need to do it right, with fair trade values and so forth. And you really need antitrust divisions with teeth. And you need to be able to make sure what mega corporations there are actually pay the taxes they owe in the countries where they owe them...

I donno. It doesn't seem so difficult, applying ordinary commonsense and decency. Only trouble is, both commonsense and decency seem pretty scarce nowadays.

  6. It comes to my attention that the Dem platform committee has nixed $15.00 per hour minimum wage. I saw in the same discussion thread, on Robert Reich's FB page, the assertion that if the minimum wage had kept up with inflation it would now be $20.00 per hour. Both of these most interesting factoids.

    1. Yes, the HRC and DWS minions on the platform committee approved planks that were pretty much the exact opposite of what Bernie supporters suggested--pro-fracking, pro-TPP, anti-$15 and on and on. I seems to me that they are hell bent on political suicide and on picking a fight with about half the delegates that they need not. And Blogspot seems to have eaten a post of mine.

    2. They're not Democrats! Why can some people not see that? Why can some people not see that, for all the I after his name, Bernie is, as you've observed, Alan, the first real Democrat on a presidential ticket since Fritz Mondale? What is the attraction that blinds HRC followers and turns them into zombies?

  7. Usually, when the stock market declines so much as a point and a half, Dad has to tell me exactly how much it's down for the day, and to the penny how much my modest portfolio lost, and precisely how and why Pres. Obama is to blame.

Interestingly, I haven't heard peep one about the six hundred point drop caused by the Brexit vote.

  9. Uprising in the Rust Belt [Click] Sounds very much like the UK…

HRC tries to twist the meaning of the Brexit vote [Click] I don't think people are going to fall for it.

Betraying Progressives, DNC Platform Backs Fracking, TPP, and Israel Occupation (among other things) [Click] "Despite its claims to want to unify voters ahead of November's election, the Democratic party appears to be pushing for an agenda that critics say ignores basic progressive policies, "staying true" to their Corporate donors above all else."

Is this a dare to half the delegates to put up a fight at the convention? Do they mean to tear the party apart? Are they living on a different planet?

    1. From the Brexit article

Even with Democrats watching the Brexit vote with some consternation, Clinton’s team claimed it is already fully addressing those economic issues fueling populist resentment at home and abroad. “She has heard and felt the sense of frustration,” Sullivan said, “the sense that our economy is not working for everyone. She’s made clear that she intends to make the kinds of bold investments and policy reforms to make the economy work for everyone.”

Excuse me while I throw up. :P If she were really interested in such things, she'd listen to Bernie.

    2. Still on the Brexit article The Clinton campaign thinks we're going to stay home on Election Day? Really? Are they so to utterly out of touch that they don't realize we're going to either write in Bernie or vote for Jill Stein? Rendel said something about getting that last ten percent, like he thinks it's just a matter of working out the right enticements? The arogant SOBs!!!

    3. It is a matter of working out the right enticements -- like adopting most of Bernie's platform. But I don't see that happening at the moment.

    4. Ms Stead Hand is now going to be BOLD? Pardon my skepticism.

RE : "Not So Fast:" yes, I recall something along those lines; will read the article now. It IS rather complicated what with the UK being made up of three countries and sundry other parts. And with no written constitution.
