Hiding in Plain Sight

  1. In plain sight, like Deaniacs!

Bill--I slept on my back pretty much my entire life, but after I put on weight (since taken off) as a side effect of my inactivity during cancer treatment, I developed sleep apnea. In addition to weight loss, what cured me was sleeping on my side. Sleeping on my left side also reduces gastric reflux. But it isn't natural for me. I needed a specialized pillow that strongly encourages one to sleep on one's side. The one (actually two) I had eventually became rather squashed and doesn't do the job; on top of that, it is no longer available. A regular pillow is too soft and too thin, so I wake up on my back. With practice I can more often sleep on my side, but a "trainer" pillow is still helpful. I found another design that looks promising and is inexpensive to boot--but back-ordered for now.

Cat--The Eternal Savage? I hadn't heard of that title, but one can imagine what ERB would write with a title like that--and I expect it would be a good romp. I must look it up--maybe it's available on Gutenberg.org.

    1. I'll just add that I'm a natural side-sleeper, but need a pillow that is thick enough to cushion my neck, or I get neck ache, or wake with a headache.

    2. Yes, in a hotel room I always try to choose the firmest pillow available. And on the train I do things to make the pillow thicker than it naturally wants to be. At home I actually use two pillows, but they're both thinner than normal. Not sure why we haven't bought a good, firm single pillow.

    3. It's interesting that you mention a firm pillow. My experience has been that a firm pillow hurts my neck. What I use is a Tempurpedic pillow, which is firm when cool, but softens as body heat warms it, so that it cradles the neck perfectly. Anyway, it works for me. We also have a Tempurpedic deluxe mattress set and it's like new, though 18 years old!

    4. Pillows are expensive, as I discovered on deciding to buy myself two new ones for my double bed. I like them nice and full, not flat, and medium firm. Two pillows from Bean's came to well over two hundred dollars! They're worth it for the comfort and they will probably last a good few years, but I did suffer mild sticker shock.

    5. Alan, I checked - it's not there or at Audible. Sorry about that. I need to remember to check the availability of books before mentioning them.

  2. I'm trying to decide between Roku and AppleTV.
Do you have any feedback to share?

Note: I'm not sure having an iPhone is a factor as I just have a 4S.

    1. You're more modern than me, Listener, as mine is a 4. I have no idear what the first sentence of your post means; it might as well be in Greek!

  3. The Apple TV will transfer anything from your smartphone or computer to your TV--really slick; our daughter has one. I think the Roku is a broadcast recorder/playback device. We have something similar made by Panasonic for use outside the US, that doesn't have the built-in restrictions of the Roku and similar devices. We can record, play back, transfer to a DVD disk, with no limitations we have found. We bought it at BK Photo, as I recall. Panasonic DMR-EH59 DVD recorder. BK Photo adapted it to US line current. We previously had one that was sold in the US with similar features and VHS play/record, but with the new restrictions on general purpose recorders in the US there was no market. (The broadcasters insert codes in the broadcasts that restrict recording and copying--which of course only work with compliant devices. As I understand it.)

    I will look for details.

  4. Here is is--at B&H Photo [Click] It doesn't interact with the Internet directly, but does what we want it to do--record TV programs for later viewing and for sharing via DVD.

  5. Thanks, Alan. Interesting! Only, what we are trying to accomplish is to be able to play Netflix and other things on our TV. Our son is staying with us, probably for the Winter, and he would like to be able to use his Netflix with us this way.
