P.S.: I realized that the dictionary my folks bought me for Christmas in 1960 (Webster's New Collegiate, 2nd Ed., based on Webster's International of 1935) gives pronunciations in which the Mary-marry-merry has not taken place--they are all separate. They also have a pronouncing list of common names (albeit far from current). That is very helpful. I shall also have to study the dictionary's guide to pronunciation. The (leather) binding of the one my folks gave me is wearing out, but I have another with a simpler binding I bought at a used book store some time ago. Webster uses a different representation of sounds than the UK dictionaries and more modern US ones, but that's OK. The print is a bit small for me these days, but I am due for a new pair of glasses this October.

    1. Thanks for the dictionary notes, Alan. We have a two volume American College Encyclopedic Dictionary c1954, so it might be fun to look up some of the pronunciations. :-)

P.S.: I found a free (scanned, so there are some errors) copy of the first Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (1906) online. It seems not to have pronunciations of words, but a dandy section on pronunciation which I shall have to compare to the one in my 1960 2nd edition. The only problem was that it was not available for download in *.mobi (Kindle) format. It was available in *.EPUB format, so I went looking for a reader. The Nook reader is discontinued and no longer available for download. I found what seems to be a good (full featured) reader available for free because it is for the Mac OS X version I use, which is not the newest. It looks very good--if anyone else needs a Mac *.EPUB reader I will be glad to share the link.

  3. From politicalwire.com"

"A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds Donald Trump is widening his lead over the GOP presidential field with 32%, followed by Jeb Bush at 16%, Ben Carson at 8%, Mike Huckabee at 7%, Scott Walker at 5%, Marco Rubio at 4% and Ted Cruz at 4%."

I swear. the longer this goes on the more certain it seems that the GOP candidates and their big donors are simply a bunch of wusses.

  4. There is no way that my mind can accept and wrap around the idea of Mr. Trump in the Oval Office. What on Earth is wrong with people that they would even bother to listen to that man? I refuse to listen to a news report that mentions him. I have no interest in his thoughts or actions. I just want him to shut up and go away. Is there an island we could send him to, along with Rush Limbaugh and that Jim Baker guy?

    1. No, he's not going to be President; but he could siphon off enough votes from the Republican candidate to throw one or more states to the Democratic candidate. I figure people are simply thumbing their noses at the GOP establishment. And it just doesn't look like the said establishment figures are inclined to do anything effective, instead of hoping against hope that DT will run out of steam soon.

P.S.: The *.pdf version of the 1916 Webster Collegiate is the version to download.
