It's Independence Day! What are your thoughts?

  1. Would Howard have been able to alter the course of the US government? I think so, at least to some degree.

    1. I agree, Alan. Someone ought to write an Alternate History story or novel where Howard won in 2004. What a - well, maybe not wonderful world this would be, but at least different and better.

  2. I want to watch A Capital Fourth tonight; Barry Manilow is going to be on. I h ope he plays nice and early. I quite literally did not recognize another name apart from the conductor, John Williams. I only want to hear Barry then will turn it off.

  3. Gotta tell you guys about Nickie Kitty and the stair lift. Last night as I was preparing to go down, Nickie was lying down on the landing. She didn't seem to be paying much attention as I prepped the chair and myself in it. When she heard the click sound of the lift starting, she leapt to her feet and as the lift and I descended, she stood perfectly still, staring. I don't know for sure, but my bet is her little jaw dropped to her toes. She didn't seem frightened, just dumbfounded.

  5. Hotter than a two-dollar pistol here today; supposed to be around 110 degrees, and I believe it. Got the swimming pool pump repaired in the AM (in addition to worn parts the motor was kaput), and the sweat was pouring off me. I planned to do it yesterday evening, but I lost about an hour and a half in the morning because of a flat tire on the way to work. Somehow picked up what looked like a fragment of a utility knife blade, that put about a three-quarter inch cut across and clear through the tread. I had road hazard insurance on the tire, and a replacement with all the charges cost me a whole $16.75. Once again I was glad to have a little electric air pump that runs off the cigarette lighter in the trunk; the spare seemed to have no air in it at all. I highly recommend carrying that particular accessory; they're cheap and last for a very long time.

listerner: The hardest parts of the diet are avoiding snacking and being patient. The former is to be expected [and a matter of habit], and the latter I deal with by keeping a record of my weight. Official weighing day is Thursday although I do it on other days as well. I put a box around the Thursday numbers, and it is easy to see them continuing to decline. I may make a graph of it out of curiosity, but haven't yet. The easiest is satisfying my hunger; I am only very rarely hungry. Because it is going slowly, I think conversion to a permanent regime of decreased caloric input post-weight loss will be easy.

    1. "I was glad to have a little electric air pump that runs off the cigarette lighter in the trunk" should read

"I was glad to have a little electric air pump in the trunk that runs off the cigarette lighter"

Was it in "A Night at the Opera" that Goucho Marx (pretending to be a big game hunter) said "I once shot an elephant in my pajamas. What an elephant was doing in my pajamas I never understood." (I paraphrase, because I am too slothful to look it up.)

    2. Alan, thanks for the air pump tip. Having a flat during such a heat wave sounds rather dangerous. What is your humidity level?

We're visiting Grands in Maine, and for the 4th it topped 90F here but with humidity only about 75%. At home today it will be mid-80s with 94% humidity, or higher. And more flooding, setting more records.

  6. Quiet day. Blessedly quiet. Warm, but not hot. A bit of wind.

No fireworks yet (we usually have some home grown ones across the valley).

Funny, growing up in SLC, the hotshot summer holiday was the 24th of July (The day Brigham Young came into the valley.) Bigger parade, bigger fireworks. The 4th was way more sober and thoughtful.

  7. Mum also thinks it won't be long before kitties are riding in my lap. So far though I haven't seen any of them so much as climb into the chairs.

LOL Alan, if you hadn't pointed it out, I wouldn't have noticed your misplaced prepositional phrase. But it does raise an interesting question of why there would be a cigarette lighter in the trunk.

The air pump does sound like a great idear. Also, I didn't know there was such a thing as road hazard insurance. I always learn things here.

Puddle, interesting about the Twenty-fourth v. the Fourth.

  8. BTW I got the most fabulous album by Art Garfunkle that he made in 2007. It's called "Some Enchanted Evening" and I cannot praise and recommend it highly enough. Some may remember he had a song on the soundtrack of the movie "A League of Their Own" a few years back - quite a few years back now. This album is more of the same and just wonderful. The blurb on Amazon described him as "the angelic half of Simon and Garfunkle," which is certainly true. In 2007 he's maybe not quite as angelic as in 1969, but still pretty celestial.
