  2. The prediction was for 2-4" of snow overnight. Looking out the window, I can almost believe 2". Almost.

    1. Well, there have been flurries off and on all day. It probably did reach 2". But highs in the 20s, which seems almost toasty compared to yesterday.

  3. Cloudy today and a bit cool; I pruned one of the persimmons. Tomorrow at least one of the cherries.

I think I have finally found an exercise that is convenient, mild, not dangerous, and effective at stretching and strengthening the psoas and associated muscles in my upper legs and lower back, thereby doing away with the lower back pain and probably protecting my knees. It is a modification (for safety) of an exercise recommended in the newspaper for strengthening muscles around the knees.

Basically it is modest knee bends. Standing up straight, I grab the edge of a bench or wash basin or some such and lower my torso more or less straight by bending my knees, not leaning forward, until my thighs are not quite parallel to the floor, then rising. I started out with ten in a day (not easy), and after a week am up to twenty twice a day (not difficult). Lower back pain almost gone (still a bit when I first get up in the morning but it's gone in minutes). Likewise restricted motion and near constant pain in my thighs somewhere between greatly reduced and completely gone.

    1. Good news about the carbon emissions. I knew things were coming along, but hadn't realized how fast.

  5. Penny's co-worker who was supposed to come on at midnight is sick. So after working midnight to noon today she will work midnight to 8 am and 4 pm to midnight tomorrow. Somebody else had better be able to take the midnight to 8 am shift Monday!

    1. I can't recall what Penny does, but that is not safe, sane or reasonable...! What would happen if she said no?

    2. Essentially she keeps an eye on things while no one else is around. Not totally incompatible with a bit of light napping in the chair.

If she said no, somebody else would have to come in when they weren't scheduled to. She can do it one day. But as I said, if Vidal is still too sick to come in at midnight Monday it will HAVE to be someone else.

    3. Lord, Bill, hope she survives. Give her a hug from me. xox

  6. Bill, that is beyond brutal--it's simply unreasonable, and goes very far beyond being a "team player." No one should be the least bit surprised if Penny were not well enough to go to work at 4 PM tomorrow. Overwork reduces our ability to fight off viruses, and one can pick those up anywhere, right?

    1. Well, it's only one weekend. She'll have two full days to recover before she has to go to work again. And of course she slept pretty much all afternoon and much of the evening today and will get 4-5 hours sleep between shifts tomorrow. A lot of people at science fiction cons manage to get by (temporarily) on that little sleep. And they're around loads of strangers. Penny will not really see anybody at work, so her exposure to viruses will be minimal.

  7. VT*Grand is here overnight, so I can't stay up much longer. Since I had to work today I spent yesterday hand-dipping Candlemas candles. Ahhh, I love February 2nd!

And Punxutawney Phil did not see his shadow so instead of there being six more weeks of winter, it's only going to be a month and a half!
