On the Feast of Stephen (2nd Day of Christmas)

  1. Hip, Hip, Howard!

Working on getting my MacBook Air set up; and should anyone have a need in the future to migrate settings, programs, etc. to a new Mac, I will share my experience. I had the same initial problem this time as the time before and the same solution (from an Apple support person) took care of it. The migration program wouldn't take the files and settings from the older Mac because the operating system version was too old. So I pulled out an external hard drive and made a bootable backup thereon using the shareware program "SuperDuper." Then I transferred to the new Mac from the backup, and it worked very well. (The icons weren't quite lined up on the desktop; no other problems as far as I have been able to tell.) I took the precaution of defragmenting the drive on the older MacBook, fixing permissions and cleaning up folders on the desktop, and emptying the trash before doing the backup.

    1. That's such helpful info, Alan, that I have copy-and-pasted it into a Draft file in Email!

      Thanks greatly for sharing!

  3. Snowing again for this fine feast of St. Stephen.

    Cold out; toasty in.

Almost finished my grandson's tree last night (about five more ornies to hang, one more to fine (know I've seen it around here recently). Verra purdy! Not sure a 17 year old boy *wants* purdy thangs, but that's the nature of Christmas, eh?

  4. Today is the day when the three bats sing (or used to sing):

    Good King Sauerkrauts looked out
    Upon his feets uneven
As the snew lay round about ...

    What's "snew"?

    I don't know. What's new with you?

Always been one of my favorite carols.

  5. A blessed St. Stephen's Day to you all!

Today I got the most wonderful Christmas surprise - a Christmas card from my estranged Aunt Patty! She's really my godmother. She and my mum have been not speaking for years. Sis and I occasionally e-mail her, but she doesn't often answer. We miss her very much. Getting a real, live Christmas card from her was just wonderful - brought me to tears.

I found "Good King Wenceslas" on my iTunes, by Percy Faith and his orchestra and put together a YouTube video. Won't be able to keep using Movie Maker on the XP machine much longer; it doesn't display even a simple, two pic video properly. I wasn't able to adjust the transition from one pic to the other as I would have preferred it. Still, it doesn't look too bad. And, for a wonder, YouTube didn't block the video...yet.

Do you know, they blocked one after it had forty views? Forty views in something like two days! It showed promise of being one of my best sellers, so to speak. *sigh*

Anyway, my channel is doing quite nicely - 107 subscribers and 241,373 views as of about ten minutes ago. I'm very pleased with it. It's one of my more successful ventures. Pity I can't make money on it, but you can't have everything.

    1. Good sign that you and your Aunt Patty may be getting back together. Hope it continues.

  6. That IS great, Cat! And it's always nice to be appreciated, for sure! congrats.

So much I can't do on the nets because of dialup, and that doesn't look to be ending any time soon. The new technology just seems to be escaping once more from the fringes, lol!

    1. Puddle, my sympathy. They can't seem to leave well alone, but must make it so derned complicated that you have tokeep running just to stay in one place. Hmmm... Is that the White Queen? She's right for sure.

  7. I think I've mentioned that I bought more than 7500 e-books (or e-items, since many were short fiction) from Fictionwise.com. Barnes & Noble bought Fictionwise some time in 2011, and last month they eliminated the company as an independent entity. My Fictionwise library was transferred to my B&N library, which had previously had about 55 books. And ever since then my B&N desktop readers have refused to recognize my books -- even the 2514 that they have downloaded to my hard drive.

An hour or so ago I finished talking to my third tech support person -- this one Tier 2. She concluded that the problem was on B&N's end and referred it up to the production and management teams. A tentative idea is that, even though they supposedly checked, they transferred a book or two or three that they didn't actually have a license for. We'll see.

But meanwhile I have discovered that I can read the books on-line. And all the Fictionwise books are already on my hard drive in formats that I can read with other readers.

  8. Wow! I suppose the more saavy we are on the internets, the more complex the sort of difficulties we will encounter. I'm pleased to hear that B&N is taking responsibility for your current dilemma, Bill.

Ah, puddle, I hope and hope that sometime you'll get a good wifi tower nearby, and so much possibility will open to you.

Cat! How wonderful that you got that Christmas card!! Now *that* feels like what Christmas is all about. And it's super to hear that you're getting due recognition with your channel! Sweet that it's all happening this week, too.

My day has been all about prepping for the big snowstorm that is bearing down on us. Got the laundry started then went to town and bought cat food and bird seed, delivered some goodies to Root*Center*Son, then went grocery shopping. I got sliced goodies from the deli along with cole slaw and potato salad. Plus all the goods for a big soup. Came home, did more laundry, made the soup. Still working on the laundry, the soup came out great, and we're all set if we lose power. Mah*Sweetie gets to work from home tomorrow. Unless the Library loses power, I will have to go to work during the midpoint of the storm.

I sure hope everyone stays safe tomorrow...and snug.

    1. Listener, glad to hear you're battened down, mostly. Should we hope for power outage at the library? *impish grin*

  9. Since about the middle of November I've read three Stephen King novels in fairly quick succession: 11-22-63, Under the Dome and It. Think I'm going to take a break for a while, though I must say he is a fine writer, much better than I thought before reading him. Guess it goes to show, we shouldn't have preconceptions.

Yesterday afternoon and evening I read Hercule Poirot's Christmas, a good story, if with rather a lot of people who turn out not to be who they appear to be. Tonight I'm going to start The Twelve Clues of Christmas. This is a new series to me. Can't quite remember, but I think it's set in the '30s. It will be a diversion anyway. Hope it's good; I'm running out of Agathas.

BTW I did read a volume of short stories about Bro. Cadfael, you know, Ellis Peters. Enjoyed those very much. I'll be starting one of the novels soon. Really looking forward to getting into this series. I've wanted to for ages, but only found the books at Audible within the past few weeks.
