December Sunset

25 comments:

  1. Hansel and Gretel stand in the woods
    watching the witch's house burn
soon, they'll go home for dinner
as if none of it happened

There was never any adult who locked them up
fattened them up prepared to feast on their bones

Dinner is served -- fat brown rolls
    goose drippings and a cookie
and off to bed like good children

We needn't talk about what happened
It didn't really happen, after all and
    it surely won't happen again

Children ages 5 to 14 in America are 13 times as likely to be murdered with guns as children in other industrialized countries...

    1. Lovely poem, Puddle. Thank you.

Thanks also for the appalling statistic.

  2. Yesterday I listened as my 6 year old first-grader granddaughter played harp and read to me.

We have to get assault weapons off the streets.

    1. Senator Feinstein proposes doing just that. She wants to reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban. Curiously, I created my petition at Avaaz to reinstate the ban without knowing Sen. Feinstein had the same idear. Talk about great minds. *wry grin*

The Connecticut shooter had two handguns and an assault weapon. Why should any civilian have an assault weapon? Please sign my petition on Avaaz to reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban.

  6. So, I'm evil. The worst mother in the world. I drove Daughter to an audition this evening--one that we only heard about today, but we're willing to accommodate her as always. But when we got there I decided to audition as well. Evil. Bad, bad, mommy. I'm going to go sit in a corner now and think about what I've done.

    1. My God, Renee, how could you embarrass your child like that? OOH! *heavy irony*

Ahem, you didn't have the unpardonable bad taste of getting a part while she didn't, did you?

    2. Sounds like Daughter is insecure. But what teen isn't?

  7. Glad to hear you got back home OK, listener; that was scary just hearing about it.

Hey, that gamma ray whatsit from the center of the galaxy really IS quite a story! I vote for jets from the black hole. (But remember that I was hoping for ptersosaur tracks on Mars--think big!) Thanks for sharing. Here's another technology story that is on a submicroscopic scale by comparison, but thought others might find it interesting:

So what did you all audition for, Renee?

We look to be having a series of rainstorms on the way, probably none severe, but amounting to a significant amount of water in such a dry area. Snow in the mountains.

Now back to "The Well at the World's End."

  9. Before recommencing the book I took a quick look at the news and saw THIS:

    Inouye Dies
Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI) died today of a respiratory ailment, "ending a life of remarkable service for his country and Hawaii that included sacrificing his right arm in World War II combat and spending 50 years as a U.S. senator," the Honolulu Star Advertiser reports. He was 88 years old.

According to his office, Inouye's last word was "Aloha."

What Inouye's Death Means for the Senate
The Washington Post notes that less than two hours after Sen. Daniel Inouye died, the Senate passed a resolution naming Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) as the new president pro tempore.

Inouye's death "also marks a significant generational shift in Senate history: Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) will be the only -- and likely the final -- veteran of World War II serving in the Senate next year."

"The death of Hawaii's senior senator also creates a vacancy atop the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee. Here too Leahy is next in line, giving him the right of first refusal to the chairman's gavel."

    1. Sad to hear of Senator Inouye's death, and glad he lived so long.

It's good to hear that Pat Leahy is now President Pro Tempore! I hope he also gets the Appropriations gavel.
