  1. {{{ ♥ Dr Dean says Renee and Demetrius are First! ♥ }}}

    9:00am Oct 18 from Demetrius:
Thanks, everyone! I got a call this morning that her hemoglobin count was stable at 8 after getting the 4 units of PRBC (packed red blood cells.) It was at 4 when she checked in. The nurse joked that she looks "about a quart low". And, that turned out to be pretty accurate! 7 is the cut-off for transfusing. So, she's above the hatch marks on the stick now to continue the automotive analogy. They took the tube out of her stomach. And, she's resting. I'm going back in once the GI consult comes in. I'll post more news when I have it.

    5:00pm Oct 18 from Demetrius:
The endoscope revealed 3 ulcers in her stomach. One showed signs of recent bleeding. That was probably the culprit. They clamped it and closed it. Now, they are watching her blood count. She'll be in for at least another day.

Midnight into Oct 19th from Demetrius:
Renee's hemoglobin count is still hovering around where it was after the transfusion. That's good. Hopefully, she kicks production into gear and it starts to go up soon. She seems to be resting comfortably. She's still being fed intravenously. Sure... It's all cool and Matrix-y. But, she REALLY wants to be able to have something with actual flavor! That has to wait until they know they don't need to go back into her stomach.

  2. Merciful Heavens! Renee must have been hurting bad for a long time, and trying to be a hero about it. I thought that was a "guy" thing! None of that old stuff about worry (or tomatoes, or spicy food, or roughage or whatever) causing ulcers, now; they are just about all caused by a bacterium, Helicobacter pylori, which can almost always be cured by a course of (oral) antibiotics.

Ohio is too far away to stop by with some ready-made supper or otherwise be helpful in person, much as I would like. Anybody here have any ideas for what can we do by remote beyond sending wishes?

  3. I've been thinking about that, Alan. I want to send a teddy bear as I did for puddle, but there are more than 20 hospitals in her city and I called and learned that she isn't at the medical center. So I'm waiting to hear from Demetrius about where she is, or might just send to the house, as I have their address.

What concerns me most is that Renee surely can't return to work right away and I don't know what that means for her semester's work...which is primarily their livelihood. And I do not know if she has medical insurance, but I rather doubt it.

Folks are welcomed to make PayPal donations to HEP which would help their situation more than anything else I can think of...along, of course, with vibes and prayers!!!

    Thanks for asking, Alan. ♥

  4. I like thinking that very soon Renee is going to feel physically better than she has in a very very long time. I'm sure she has already had the thought, "This explains a lot!"

Alan ~~ I'm not convinced that stress has no role in causing ulcers. A lot of people carry H. pylori without ever getting ulcers (or gastric cancer, which seems to be what H. pylori causes in Japan). But it's true that H. pylori is an essential part of the process. Get rid of the bug and the ulcer goes away.

listener ~~ I don't know for sure how the illness will affect renee's employmnet, but it's important to remember that she has a contract. The college can't simply decide to let her go, as would be the case for many of the jobs we are familiar with.

  6. They said they were sending them for biopsy to test for h pylori. I had thought that was a given.

  9. Nice to see you posting! That's a good sign for sure! Puddle will be beside herself when she finds out what she's been missing. Sure hope she's back in communication soon (and is herself okay)!

  10. I might have finally dozed a teeny bit. Demetrius went home to tend to the kids and dogs. But it's hard to sleep with a roommate watching TV and talking on the phone. I think she is moving to another room soon.

Anyway, I heard someone call my name from the other side of the curtain, and it was delivery of the soft cuddly teddy. Thanks SO much listener and everybody else. I asked the nurse to set it near my window so I could manage not to spill any grape juice on it.

I'm super happy to be out of ICU before Nurse Ratched had me for another overnight shift.
