It seems that Mexico is proceeding steadily with development of the Tehuantepec Corridor. I would be surprised if Trumpf and his minions have any idea what it is or what it augurs for international commerce. Good relations between Mexico and China will obviously be helpful to the project. -----Alan
Feeling a bit envious that we missed it. We remember the 25 November 1988 earthquake that was centered in Quebec. It was Daughter's 12th birthday and we have guests visiting from Quebec! They called home and it was far stronger up there...a 5.9! Our freestanding bookshelves were swaying. The children were upstairs playing, and their toys fell over. When they tried to stand up, they also fell over! Then they ran down the stairs.
Number one thing to do in an earthquake is to shelter in a doorway/door frame. A strong table is a good second choice. Kids should be trained to do that. A balloon-frame house, even an old one, is very unlikely to collapse. If not bolted to the foundation it may walk off and be broken; if built on cripple studs those may fail, but in either case the house will not collapse. Running outside means that things (e.g. roofing tiles, porch roof, window glass, trees) can fall on you. If it was a serious earthquake (very unlikely in your neck of the woods), after things calm down turn off the gas; if you don't have the official type of wrench, a pipe wrench will do. ------Alan
Keeping eyes on a U.S. bird flu outbreak that could quickly escalate NYT: When bird flu first struck dairy cattle a year ago, it seemed possible that it might affect a few isolated herds and disappear as quickly as it had appeared. Instead, the virus has infected more than 900 herds and dozens of people, killing one, and the outbreak shows no signs of abating.
A pandemic is not inevitable even now, more than a dozen experts said in interviews. But a series of developments over the past few weeks indicate that the possibility is no longer remote.
Toothless guidelines, inadequate testing and long delays in releasing data — echoes of the missteps during the COVID-19 pandemic — have squandered opportunities for containing the outbreak, the experts said. -- nordy

Earthquake off the coast of York, Maine rattles New England
ReplyDeleteThe kids and grands in Kennebunk, Maine felt it, as did family in central NH.

But don't worry, we have no more research, no more CDC, no more communication, and we'll have RFK, Jr and Oz at the helm. 😱🤮
DeleteHonestly, I think our only hope is that nurses will spread the word when cases show up at hospitals.
