I don’t know why everyone seems so shocked there’s the first ever blizzard warning in Louisiana. Yesterday marked a cold day in hell…

    1. Indeed! Also I wore my F Trump necklace to the small sewing business. They asked what the qr code said. I told them. Gales of laughter ensued. ~Susan

    3. Nice day here; clear sky, low 38, high 62 predicted, no wind. Must be the governor's doing.

    4. Alan, I was referring to the cold day in hell as regards the Inauguration...apparently hell froze over.

    5. Up here in Vermont we only had a low of -1ºF; tonight should reach -2ºF. No big deal. It's January.

    6. I understood the reference, listener. But double intenders are fun, too.

    1. Lots more, too; obviously they were well organized in advance. Good reading.

    2. APNews:"In addition to New Jersey and the two cities, California, Massachusetts, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin joined the lawsuit to stop the order.

"Arizona, Illinois, Oregon and Washington filed a separate suit in federal court challenging Trump’s order as well."

    3. also...In addition to the states, the District of Columbia and San Francisco, immigrant rights groups are also suing to stop Trump’s order.

Chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts along with other immigrant rights advocates filed a suit in New Hampshire federal court.

  4. Episcopal Bishop Budde makes a plea directly to DT during prayer service

You don't want to miss this. It was even sent to me by my DIL who despises religion.

    1. I read that Melania held two Bibles for DT to put his hand on for the presidential oath of office, but he did not actually touch the uppermost one; I wonder if that was because of superstition or contempt, but favor the latter.

  5. Musk’s straight-arm gesture embraced by right-wing extremists regardless of what he meant.
AP: Right-wing extremists are celebrating Elon Musk’s straight-arm gesture during a speech Monday, although his intention wasn’t totally clear and some hate watchdogs are saying not to read too much into it.

“I just want to say thank you for making it happen,” Musk said during a speech at Capital One Arena, referring to Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election. Then he slapped his hand on his chest, extended his arm straight out and up with his palm facing down.
(I referred to this on the last thread, asking if anybody but me had seen Musk's quasi-Nazi salute.) -- nordy

    1. I saw a clip of it, nordy, and it definitely looks like the Nazi salute, both in position of the hand and in the swift execution of the move.

    2. To be technical, it is the "Roman Salute," adopted (as memory serves me) by the German fascists from the Italian fascists. For a while (1920's?) it was sometimes used to salute the US flag (I saw it once in an old movie, with no fascist implication).

It was still being used to salute the flag I the 1940s

    2. Sure!
Or how about Mexico renames the USA "North Mexico" up to the Mason-Dixon Line, and above that it's "South Canada"?

    3. At this moment in history, I bet the majority of persons in New England would vote to become the Province of New England. We'd prefer to take our Social Security funds with us as a dowry. But even without that the savings in medical costs might still make it feasible.

  7. I was reflecting on Alzheimer's disease, which afflicted both my mother and my brother. They also both had gout; I have neither. So I wondered if there might be an association between the two problems. It has been studied, and the correlation is not significantly better than chance.

    1. Did your father also have Alzheimer's? If not, you have a 50-50 chance of NOT getting it. How about your mother's parents and siblings? You may well have a better than 50-50 chance of not getting it. Wil's mother and brother died of pancreatic cancer in their early 60's. Their father and the other 9 siblings have not gotten it.

    2. Wil has already outlived both his parents as regards age at death. His dad died at age 69 of brain cancer. No one else in the family has had brain cancer. His eldest sibling, a sister, had Alzheimer's when she died. No one else has shown signs of it. (And Wil is 7th of 10!)

    3. My father did not live long enough to display signs of Alzheimer's disease, but his half-siblings have largely lived into their 90's without it. He must have had repeated strep throats, leading to scarlet fever and rheumatic fever (this was before antibiotics). If antibiotics are not available, someone who comes down with rheumatic fever needs a full year of bed rest, but when he felt better his mother let him get up and go to school. This caused severe damage to his heart, which ultimately led to his death at 54.

    4. It has become clear that when young (around 13?) I suffered significant lung damage as a result of primary atypical pneumonia, for which there was no good antibiotic at the time---twice in two years. I suspect that I came down with a subclinical Covid infection back during the first go-round, which further decreased my pulmonary function--- but it is tolerable so far. I might be very slowly recovering.
