Does sugar cause hyperactivity in children? Seattle Times: does sugar increase ADHD-related hyperactivity, or does having ADHD increase the desire for sugar? First, ADHD is a complicated condition. Genetics plays a large role, but adverse environmental exposures during pregnancy and early childhood also increase risk. Some research has found that people with ADHD may have low levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that affects emotions, behavior and movement but is also known as the “feel-good hormone.” Sugar causes a release of dopamine in the brain. Also, ADHD medication can reduce appetite, so if kids don’t eat enough during the day because they’re not hungry, they may be ravenous as their medication wears off later in the day, and their brains and bodies may gravitate toward the easy energy that sugar provides. -- nordy
Our approach when home schooling was to describe food as fuel. If you feed your fire with protein that's like a log on the fire, and it will last you a long time. Fruits and Vegetables are more like smaller sticks. Potato Chips and such are like kindling. And sugar is like paper. So, it helps to build your fire with a good mix and with care.
