    1. I considered registering as a Republican despite the certain increase in election junk mail and junk e-mail it would precipitate, in order to vote for Chris Christie in the primary. As for Haley, when she claimed that her own state seceded from the Union for economic reasons rather than to protect slavery, that completely ruled her out for me. Granted that she might have spoken out of ignorance and been mislead by liars, to have stated a blatant untruth about her own state's articles of secession was jaw-dropping. I suppose that part of the grade-school social studies curriculum in South Carolina is sugar coated to some degree, just like the Spanish mission system in California, but that is no excuse for a governor.

    2. It'e important to recognize that there were major economic issues, especially about tariffs, between the agricultural South and the industrializing North. These issues affected the entire free population, not just the distinct minority rich enough to afford a slave. But over the preceding decade or two, slavery had dome to politically symbolize all the issues dividing the two regions -- perhaps even cultural divisions such as hot bread vs. cold bread. So while there were a number of tensions leading up to the war, slavery was the trigger. Leading to the saying, "A rich man's war but a poor man's fight."

  3. Republicans in a Texas county ditched technology and counted votes by hand. Here’s what happened. [Click] Definitely slower and more expensive than they had expected; probably not a long ballot, either. I remember occasional “long ballots” that were really long—six or eight feet.

  10. 🌺 puddle update from her son:

Paula and Scott P and Joyce came to visit on Saturday and Sunday. She was not as verbal as she was just a couple days earlier, but she did pose for a picture by sticking her tongue out, and a little sly smile. We did a quick trip to the WVa cabin and back again for one last visit. Thanks Paula and Joyce and Scott, for coming out.

Note: I know that Paula is puddle's sister.
