  1. Heather Cox Richardson has an important writeup tonight:

Yesterday the official account of the Republican National Committee tweeted Independence Day greetings with a graphic of the Liberian flag, which has one star, rather than that of the United States, which has fifty.

Even more troubling was the tweet from Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) attributing to founder Patrick Henry a false quotation saying that “this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Historian Seth Cotlar noted that the quotation actually came from the April 1956 issue of a virulently antisemitic white nationalist magazine, The Virginian.

Also yesterday, Trump-appointed judge Terry A. Doughty of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana issued a preliminary injunction saying the First Amendment prevents the government from trying to stop the spread of disinformation.

    1. Heather Cox Richardson was asked:
This post scares me deeply that our democracy is dying. I truly haven't been this concerned before now. Are we doomed?

      Heather Cox Richardson responded:
No. Tomorrow will be the account of the pushback.

    2. Government by the people has never been fully realized. Now we are on the cusp and the old guard is getting desperate. We have had half a century trying to force women back into their subordinate position, but neither strictures nor flattery have worked.
Someone, anyone (children, women, slaves or migrants) providing free labor is an addiction that is hard to shake because it is based on a sense lf self-importance that males intimidated by the patriarchy crave. Poor Donald is iconic--macho man, compensating for the abuse inflicted by his dad.
I think it is interesting that both Clinton and Obama were fatherless, in a way, and the Bush clan is clearly a matriarchy.

  2. Completely off topic, we have a squash plant of some sort (or perhaps several) growing out (way out!) of our compost heap and we have been waiting to see what kind. (If lucky it might be kabocha, but it is most likely zucchini.) Yesterday I noticed flowers had formed, but not yet opened.

    2. (Was there a topic?)

I'm intrigued to hear what sort of plant this turns out to be.
      Nice to have a volunteer!

    3. This afternoon I redirected one stem that was about to climb over the six-foot fence into the neighbors' back yard. . .

    1. Victory to Ukraine!

I have to say, I'm very upset that the US is talking of sending cluster bombs for Ukraine to use. They fall in, well, clusters and they don't always all explode. They are also bright coloured and can look like a toy to a child...

  4. From Reuters:

Donald Trump aide Walt Nauta pleaded not guilty at a Miami federal courthouse on Thursday to charges he helped the former U.S. president hide top secret documents that Trump took when he left the White House in 2021. [And also for lying to federal investigators.]
Attorney Stanley Woodward entered the plea for Nauta at an arraignment lasting a few minutes. Nauta's Florida-based lawyer, Sasha Dadan, was also present….
Dadan, his Florida attorney, is a former public defender who ran unsuccessfully for the state's House of Representatives as a Republican in 2018.
Woodward, based in Washington, has represented others in Trump's circle including former aides Dan Scavino and Peter Navarro, as well as several defendants charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters.

    1. I doubt it, but wonder if Trump and Nauta might become cellmates.

    1. Nice idea...both the Swift Bricks and the Bee Bricks. I wonder how they deal with the guano. And I hope they allow exceptions to the mandatory rule for Bee Bricks...as I know some folks who are very allergic to bee stings that could be fatal...!

    1. Excellent. Let's hope the concept catches on, and before long they'll all throw each other out. Either way, We the People need to throw them out.

  8. Here's one for you, Susan:

From Heather Cox Richardson: "Yesterday, those committed to protecting abortion rights in Ohio turned in 70% more signatures than they needed to get a measure amending the constitution to protect that access on the ballot this November."
