  4. https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-trumps-washington/obituary-for-a-failed-presidency?mbid=social_facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_brand=tny&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=facebook

"Through it all, Trump remained a unique combination of absurd and dangerous. He spent much of his time watching Fox News and playing golf, and, although he bragged that he knew more than the experts about everything from nuclear weapons to medicine, he displayed little interest in the nuances of governing. He surrounded himself with sycophants and was so historically illiterate he seemed genuinely surprised to have discovered that Abraham Lincoln was a member of the Republican Party. His critics could never quite decide, at least not until the catastrophes of 2020 forced a choice, whether Trump was a clown or a modern-day Caligula. Even up until the storming of the Capitol, many of even his most dedicated critics were not sure that a man they knew to be incompetent and undisciplined and profoundly unstrategic could wreak so much havoc on America’s democracy."

I WILL BE SO GLAD TO SEE THE LAST OF HIM!

  5. An hour and a half to go.

Yesterday morning I smelled some woodsmoke--just a hint. Late yesterday afternoon it looked like there was some ash in the swimming pool. This morning the air is clearly smokey to the north. The news says that there are fires in the mountains to the northwest of here.

    1. Oh wow. I hadn't heard that. With about a foot of snow on the ground here, it's hard to wrap my mind around such severe drought that there could be fires in Winter. That makes my heart sad. I hope California can survive climate change.

  6. The person leading the Pledge did her own sign language interpretation. That was pretty cool.

    1. Very cool, indeed!

Vermont's Governor does press conferences every Tuesday and Friday that last about two hours. It is televised and they always have sign language interpreters ~ usually three over the course of the two hours. It's a lot of work!

The press conferences were started to address the pandemic, and were three times per week for many months. And always, they stay and answer ALL the questions of ALL the reporters, be they present or attending by Zoom.

Currently, ironically enough, the Governor and most of his cabinet are quarantining after a "contractor who offers services" tested positive with Covid. I suspect it was one of the persons who does sign language as they are the only ones who don't use a mask.

I hope everyone comes through all right.

    2. I appreciated that President Biden thanked all his predecessors "who are here with us today" then mentioned President Carter as well. He did not include he whose name has been shamed for all time.

    3. And I love that he took the oath 11 minutes early!

The nuclear codes are safe again.

  8. So the deed has been done, and despite a really rum crew being pardoned, at least no hot war was started. A little while ago I picked up a small, ovoid, dark brown object from the floor. I wasn't sure if it was a candied roasted almond or a bit of dried cat poop until I put on my reading glasses and verified that it was the former. May that be an augury for the Biden administration.

    1. Oooh! Great augury! Any flights of birds to interpret? As memory serves me, one of the auguries of the greatness of Rome was that a flight of birds flew over the auspicious shoulder of Romulus.

    2. Not that I noticed. The last bird that showed up at a political event chose Bernie.

  11. So Donald Trump is gone from the government. Good riddance! But apparently there will still be a Senate trial that will give him a last chance to beat his own drum. Some people seem to think the trial will be bad publicity for him, but the old Hollywood adage fully applies to Trump: The only bad publicity is no publicity.

    1. Puffy Pompeo is especially problematic and he is rumored to have ambitions for 2024. He is just another theocratic white supremacist. No thank you. I'm agreeing with China on these guys.

  16. Looks like Live Journal is also now owned by Google. If so, re Puddle's observations on the last thread, it might also have Google related glitches.

  17. It was a lovely ceremony,wasn't it?

  18. All right. What user name should I use for a Live Journal account? My assumption is you're not allowed to change user name. So it's better to have one from the outset that we can all agree upon and can all remember. "Howard Empowered?" Dumbledor's Army?" Suggestions?

I think that gives it character.

    3. Oh, and the colon means Howard can't be read as a verb.

  20. From The Atlantic: Biden Should Go Big, Fast, and Simple [Click] Emulate FDR rather than Obama. I concur; I did not approve of Obama’s timidity. And the author sees some signs of an FDR-like character in Uncle Joe.
