  1. Impeachment Trial to Begin on Tuesday [Click] Interestingly, the date is determined by the Speaker of the House. . .

    1. What the hell is the Speaker thinking? The Senate has an entire cabinet to confirm. Besides, the longer the investigation goes on, the worse Trump looks and, potentially, the more Republicans would vote to convict. Does Pelosi want Trump to be convicted?

In this particular instance I agree with McConnell that later is better. But what's done is done. We'll have to wait and see.

    2. It occurs to me that there might be two reasons:
      1) To show McConnel that he is not in control, and
      2) To make sure that Trump's attorney (he just found one, from South Carolina) is instantly in over his head.

    3. Yes! McConnell is still trying to force acceptance of the filibuster. He has RUN everything for 12 years, or more, and he's got to be shown that he doesn't make all the rules any more, that he can no longer block votes, etc. Schumer says it will be a "real trial" and I want to see how many GOP Senators will still support trump after all his wrong-doing is brought to light in public. If Democrats don't stiffen their spines and make a strong stand for the people while they have the chance they will be swept away in 2022 and we can't afford that. Republicans can have all the "unity" they claim to want (but only when they are in the minority) AFTER trump, Cruz, Hawley and others of their ilk have paid the price for their acts.

    4. I'm hesitant to agree with McConnell on anything. I do not trust him at all. He is so slippery and cruel that he'll do whatever is best for anyone but the Democrats.

  3. Re the Live Journal community:

There are now no ads. They were screwing up my browser-screen reader interface. The only way to get rid of them was to upgrade to premium. So that's no longer a problem.

I need to investigate LJ communities. For instance, do all members of a community have to be LJ members? How does one send out invitations and how does one create admins and mods.

The blog template can be changed. In fact, when I visited the blog just now, the formatting was different from last time I saw it last night. It's back now. That's something to keep an eye on.

As far as I know, the only way to change the size of a photo in a post or "entry" is to edit the entry and adjust the size. In the present instance, with the blog screen maximized, the photo of Nickie is a reasonable size. I can make it larger if you want.

So, is the consensus that I should proceed to learn about and implement the community?

    1. It looks like anyone who wants to be a member of the community has to have a Live Journal account. Accounts are free and easy to set up. Please everyone post your user name here as you acquire it so I can add you. Please also indicate if you would like to be a moderator or maintainer. Obviously, everybody needs posting access, so you don't have to indicate that.

Listener, would you please contact Renee and Hannah to let them know about the new blog? Thanks.

    2. I posted this several items down, then realized it should be here, so here it is:

Wikipedia on LiveJournal [Click] Bill--probably the reason you saw an ad in Russian is that Live Journal, although it started in the US, is now a Russian company.

    3. At a cursory glance it seemed to me Live Journal was owned by Google. But who am I to argue with Wikipedia. :)

    4. As a non-admin I'm not clear why we need to change. Is it that admin privileges have been lost and can't be recovered? I'd appreciate a concise explanation.

And while I'm about as far from a privacy freak as you can get, I'm not entirely comfortable with Russia having access to my data. Russia has spent more than four years sowing division and discord.

    5. Bill, those of us with admin privileges (keys to the blog) have inexplicably lost the ability to delete comments here on the thread. The ability to delete comments still exists buried deep in the belly of the blog, but it's no longer convenient.

More importantly, Listener has been having major difficulty accessing the blog in general. She mentioned a secret Facebook group; but I don't feel comfortable with secret groups, while Alan is disinclined to join Facebook. Listener objects to Word Press - I forget why.

There aren't that many other places. I could grapple with Drupal, which I haven't used since Disabled Americans for Democracy bit the dust. A quick glance showed that it's more complicated than when in DAFD's day. I could certainly check it out more thoroughly. Or, I could construct a simple web site... Presumably commenting add ons still exist. I haven't worked with such things for nearly twenty years, so am no longer familiar with what's out there. Hmmm... Not altogether sure I remember how to get into my free Earthlink space...Come to that, I have no idear what my Earthlink password is.

    6. Bill, I used to be able to access HEP via computer or iPhone and on two different browsers on each. After the last iPhone update, Blogger would only allow me to get into the page where we create new threads, but will not recognise me to post...which seems incredibly schizophrenic. And now, Safari on my computer won't let me post, so I am down to just Chrome on my computer. And now all we Admins no longer have a way to delete from the posting page. So I feel I am working with one hand tied behind my back and there is just one strand left before I am unable to be here at all.

So I feel we at least need a Plan B for when Blogger fails that one more way.

    7. Cat, what makes me disinclined toward Wordpress is that it has zero glitz. I have posted on a friend's Wordpress page, and have a way to do that. But I have never started a Wordpress topic, so I don't know how it works. Moreover, it's just a picture at the top and conversation. That's what we have now, so okay we could do that and not lose much, but we wouldn't gain anything either. So it's still dependent on one person to keep the new threads going.

What I like about the secret Facebook group option is simply that all members are completely co-equal and it's as easy as commenting to post a photo or a link that shows a photo right in the comments section. Anyone can post a new topic at any time and it flows along well without even having to create a new front page each day.

But there are reasonable objections to Facebook in general, so c'est la vie.

It sounds like if Blogger fails us we'll have to go to Wordpress.

    8. Meant to add that I'm not sure I have it in me to be an Admin at Wordpress. But I would cheerfully follow there and blog with you all.

    9. PS: On Wordpress, is there any provision for keeping the blog out of the mainstream, or do we have to take in all comers? I rather like HEP being our familiar group, and sure wouldn't want to have trolls coming by.

    10. Catreona, I am able to contact Renee, but I don't know Hannah's contact info. But puddle might.

I gather we are not migrating to LiveJournal after all, though?
I'm not willing to if it's owned by Russia.

    11. Thanks for the explanations. What hadn't been clear was whether some of the problems I had seen mentioned were permanent or fixable. It sound like there is no truly good solution. Just least bad.

    12. BTW, I thought that individuals could delete their own posts on Blogspot; I had been doing that for some time, but the "delete" link has disappeared. But maybe someone had given me a promotion that I wasn't aware of. I defer to the considered judgment of others. Wherever we go (if Blogspot doesn't get repaired) I will use unique and improbable alias and password.
