  1. Back from San Francisco; left during the evening rush hour, but I've seen far worse traffic. From what folks said on the previous thread it seems that the Iowa Dems are bound and determined to prove that they can't be trusted to run a caucus. This is the second time in a row that they messed up, and the Iowa GOP messed up three elections ago, as memory serves me. I don't think they could handle ranked choice voting, either. It's high time their special privilege was revoked. BTW, I read that Illinois is by many measures the most average state in the nation.

    1. If Illinois opts to replace Iowa, declaring themselves “the most average state in the nation”, then I think perhaps they are. 😉

    2. I hadn't heard that about Illinois. But it's true that we are a very diverse state. We have the nation's third largest city, with the metro area spilling over into Indiana and Wisconsin, plus the suburbs of another large city. But there are also huge swaths of farmland one of the few places in the country where coal is still almost king. There are large numbers of African-Americans in the Chicago area and East St. Louis, with many Latinx, almost evenly split between Mexican-Americans and Puerto Ricans, in Chicago.

But I don't see why Iowa couldn't handle ranked-choice voting. If the all-volunteer Hugo award administrators can handle it, why couldn't Iowa? Even if it was left to the parties.

  2. NH’s midnight vote included three towns, and Klobuchar garnered the most votes.

    In Dixville Notch itself...

“Five voters in Dixville Notch showed up to make their selection at midnight. Two Democrats voted for Bloomberg, one for Buttigieg and one for Sanders. The sole Republican voter also wrote in Bloomberg.”

  3. In the Baptismal Covenant we are asked: "Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?" In a life dedicated to respecting and restoring dignity to others, we cannot help but be political, for human dignity is inseparable from adequate food, shelter, clean water, medical care, education, and respect, regardless of gender, orientation, race, religion or country of origin. And all of these are about the use, or abuse, of power.

  5. Just looking at pictures of Bernie makes me smile. I will never fathom why some people insist on portraying him as grumpy and dour. As said before, he has always struck me as quite charming, though not in a slick way. Then again, the DNC, their Clintonistas and centrists are profoundly threatened by Bernie. Unfortunately, it's human nature to demonize that which threatens us.

Sanders Overtakes Biden In Another National Poll
February 11, 2020 By Taegan Goddard
A new Monmouth poll finds Bernie Sanders leading the Democratic presidential race nationwide with 26%, followed by Joe Biden at 16%, Elizabeth Warren at 13%, Pete Buttigieg at 13%, Mike Bloomberg at 11% and Amy Klobuchar at 6%.
Said pollster Patrick Murray: “Iowa has had a significant impact on the race, especially for Biden, whose support was always soft and based largely on the perception of electability.”
Also interesting: “Democratic voters in states that hold nominating contests this month through Super Tuesday spread their support across a number of candidates – 21% Sanders, 16% Warren, 14% Biden, 13% Bloomberg, 11% Buttigieg, 7% Klobuchar, and 6% Yang. In states that vote after Super Tuesday, 30% back Sanders, 18% Biden, 14% Buttigieg, 11% Warren, 9% Bloomberg, 5% Klobuchar, and 3% Yang.”

  36. I enjoyed Treasure Planet, except possibly for the scene in which the spacecraft rode the winds of a supernova. My current backup book, a reread for nights when I'm too tired to concentrate on anything much but need something to listen to, is The Exploding Suns: Secrets of the Supernovas by Isaac Asimov. So, I know no spacecraft could do what the spacecraft in the movie did, especially as the supernova collapsed into a black hole before our very eyes and the hapless first officer was lost overboard into it. *sigh* Sometimes it doesn't pay to know too much. But it was a good movie overall. Silver was a rogue, of course, but one with a heart of gold in the end.

It's been, let's see, must be almost thirty years since I last read The Confessions of St. Augustine. Remember especially loving Books XI through XIII, dealing with God and eternity. Looking forward to rereading. It's just that I go through periods of being unable to concentrate on serious books. They always pass, thankfully. I hope to get back to St. Augustine later this week. But I do need to read up as much as possible on my movie and watch it again to write the quiz. Maybe I'll take up The Confessions again over the weekend.
