  2. Rube Goldberg retrospective [Click] Gee—I didn’t know he invented the feeding machine in Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times,” or that he did a lot of political cartoons. Interestingly, the article doesn’t mention that he was a UC Berkeley graduate, and drew cartoons for the campus magazine.

    Thinking of the current political situation, it has been my experience (although not a new or unique) observation) that management is the only effective recruiter for a union. But things have to get pretty bad before the workers take that step—just like it says in the US Declaration of Independence. I wonder if, and have sincere hope that, Trump & company will prove to be remarkable recruiters for the Democratic Party. Voter registration statistics will be something to keep an eye on during the coming year; already they show promise.

    1. I hadn't heard anything about it. Will look into it. Presumably it is because of high winds; It had become obvious that fires are significantly more likely in certain areas of the state at times of high winds, due to sparks and breaks in power lines.

  4. Here is everything I could find in the Constitution about impeachment. There is nothing said about a vote of the House, for instance.

    The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.


    The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

    Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

    The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any Subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, and he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.
    The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

    The Trial of all Crimes, except in Cases of Impeachment, shall be by Jury;

  5. There has been continuing speculation about which senators might be willing to convict Trump in an impeachment trial. Possibilities include:

    Those who want to be on the right side of history.
    Those who are privately fuming about Trump's behavior.
    Those who are retiring at the end of the current Congress.
    Those who do not have a viable GOP primary opponent
    (deadlines to register are not far off)
    Those who have a viable Democratic challenger.

    Those could add up. And remember that just before Nixon was given an offer he couldn't refuse, his public approval did a swan dive.
