  1. Today (well, yesterday to you--it is still Saturday here) we renovated a flower bed, mostly planted with iris, some red amaryllis and some summer crocus. Actually the dirt was pretty good, but hadn't been thoroughly dug up for years. Worked in sand, mulch and manure and got it ready to replant in the morning. Quit about 5 PM Sun Time, came inside and found the wall clock was way off--read 7:30.

Bill--thinking of the Illinois legislature being up to some good, I am reminded of a Mike Royko column about the new idea of having citizens report things that need fixing, like potholes in the streets, to the appropriate city office. He compared the proposed new system to the existing one of working through the local ward heeler, and showed why it couldn't work. Royko was one of my favorite columnists--still is, in fact.

    1. Chicago's new mayor, inaugurated last week, is seriously trying to reduce aldermanic power. News stories suggest she is succeeding, although as someone a mile outside the city limits it's hard for me to judge. The indictment of a prominent alderman helps her cause.

    2. There is a Facebook page called “VT Roads” where folks post if they see traffic backed up, an accident, terrible potholes or whatever. It saves folks getting stuck in traffic. Folks are not allowed to post identifying information or photos of accidents, of course.
Turns out, the highway dept and town road crews monitor the page! Quite often when an issue is mentioned it is fixed that same day...!

    3. Gee, the road crews better be careful--if they fix the potholes that fast, folks could start expecting it!

  2. Donald Trump is lashing out at Mexico but his real fight is at home [Click] Gee; investors scuttling back to the security of German bonds; Pelosi as a toreador; I like it!

  3. Germany's Merkel vows to carry on despite coalition setback [Click] Notable tidbit: “And on Saturday, an opinion poll showed that support for the SPD was the lowest it had ever been, at just 12%. At the same time, the Greens were shown to have overtaken the CDU as Germany's most popular party for the first time.”

  4. Visiting the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach [Click] I do wonder if Trump will manage to outdo the disgrace of his refusal, because of a bit of rain, to join in the commemoration of the end of the Great War at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery. It wouldn’t surprise me.

  5. We made it.
49 straight hours of power grandparenting.
It was utterly delightful and quite exhausting.
Delightful wins by a hug! 💝

  7. Don't expect to see me around here tomorrow; up at 0415 hrs to catch the plane to Los Angeles for the same civil case I went down there for last week. Home by Amtrak (better timing than by airplane).

    1. Oh, and rather than take my laptop to stay in touch and overdose on news, I shall take sketching supplies. I may spend some time in Los Angeles Union Station, which offers good sketching opportunities.
