  1. While I harbour no admiration for Prince Charles, as an American I am embarrassed by the unbridled hubris and incomprehensible rudeness of Florida's Governor Rick Scott.

    1. Everyone knows that Fulgencio Batista was a paragon of social and democratic virtue, right? And everything is safe and peaceful in Florida, right? Think of what all those good Floridians like Meyer Lansky and his buddies lost during the Revolution--poor things! [Aside--does Scott take pills, or is he just naturally insane?]

  2. Cat--re Sherrod Brown opinion piece. I just put it there for the sake of conversation, and to show something about the man. I took it at face value--that he might connect with voters in his four states that matter, but seems to be an anachronism. A very decent man, though.

    1. Well, I guess I'm an anachronism, because he sounds like someone who believes what I believe, whom I could wholeheartedly support.

  4. listener--the information you posted about the Browns' divorce is breath-taking on its face. Not that I know anything about it one way or another, but it put me in mind of the sort of exaggerated claims at least sometimes made in the days before no-fault divorce laws. Here is some of what Wikipedia says:

Years later, Recchie walked back her claims of physical violence against Brown.[96] She and Schultz became friends and filmed an ad together for Brown's 2006 Senate campaign. Recchie hosted a fund-raising event for Brown's 2012 reelection campaign against Republican Josh Mandel and issued a statement saying, "I understand that in campaigns you often have to go after your opponent, but Josh Mandel should know better than to go after our family. I ask that he immediately put a stop to this kind of politics. I was proud to support Sherrod in 2006 and I'm proud to support him again this time around against Josh Mandel. Josh Mandel should immediately stop this kind of dirty campaigning."

    1. Thanks! I'd kind of (but not wholeheartedly) like to know what caused his wife to make the original allegations and what shred of truth might be in them. It leaves me uneasy. At the same time, I don't want to be swayed by slander. But there is a difference between an opponent making up a lie and a spouse deciding to divorce someone. What was the real reason for the divorce, then?

  6. Although I am slightly irritated that Dems stole the "Green New Deal" slogan from the Green Party without attribution, that is what typically happens with good third party ideas. It occurs to me that they ought to take a cue from the politics of the Interstate Highway System, and present it as a national defense issue.

  7. Speaking of toads, listener, I just now happened across a recipe for fried toads, to which a note was appended that they are the New England equivalent of hush puppies. I learn something every day, if I'm not careful!

    1. I've never heard of fried toads (so must be a southern New England thing, ha!). What's a hush puppy?

    2. A hushpuppy is a little bit of fried Heaven.

More specifically, it is a batter fried ball (more or less) of cornmeal-based dough. We used to get them at Long John Silver's with fish and chips. They are particularly scrumptious when dipped in tartar sauce and catsup.

    3. Wikipedia: Hushpuppy [Click] But it seems that neither Wikipedia nor Google know about fried toads! So here is the recipe from the New England Cook Book section of The Woman’s Day Encyclopedia of Cookery (which I bought at a grocery store, one volume per week, when I was going to state college).

      FRIED TOADS

      2 cups rye meal
      1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
      1 egg, well beaten
      1 teaspoon baking soda
      2/3 cup dark molasses
      1/2 teaspoon salt
Fat or lard for deep frying

Combine all ingredients except fat and blend well. Add a little extra sour milk if mixture is too thick. Drop by teaspoonsful into hot deep fat (380 degrees F on a frying thermometer) and fry for about 30 minutes. Serve at once. Makes about 4 1/2 dozen toads.
Note: This is the New England version of Hush Puppies.

    4. Hushpuppy recipe from the same cookbook:

      HUSH PUPPIES

      2 cups water-ground cornmeal
      1 1/2 teaspoon salt
      1 teaspoon sugar
      2 teaspoons baking powder
      1 tablespoon instant minced onion
      2 eggs, beaten
      1/2 cup milk
      Fat for frying

Mix first five ingredients. Add eggs and milk; mix well. Shape into balls the size of a large walnut. Fry in hot deep fat (375 deg. F on a frying thermometer) until well browned and done, turning once. Drain on absorbent paper. Makes 4 servings.

  8. I mailed 2 dozen pumpkin muffins to my grandson and a loaf of dill bread to his daddy (Son #1) for his birthday. Just got a series of texts from Son. Grandson said, "Oh, is that the good bread from Grandma Susan?" Dad said, "No, this is for me, the muffins are for you." Grandson said, "We'll see about that and walked off." Cracked me up.

  9. From Faux Gnus: "After Lawrence, Warren is set to travel north to campaign in New Hampshire before flying to Iowa for a three-stop tour across the state on Sunday — her second visit to the Hawkeye State since announcing the formation of an exploratory campaign on New Year’s Eve. Later in the week, Warren plans to visit South Carolina, Georgia, Nevada and California." So far I haven't been able to find what her California itinerary will be...

  11. My local supermarket is starting to have a better selection of good beers. One I bought this time is Revolution Brewing's Eugene Robust Porter. There's nothing on the can to specifically indicate who it was named for, but from the picture on the front and the raised fist on the back I suspect it was Eugene Debs.
