A rather nice opinion piece to start the day.

The Tallahassee gunman has been identified as Scott Paul Beierle, 40. “[N]o connection between the shooter and the victims or the location had yet been determined. Police [are] looking at social media, cell phone records and interviewing friends and neighbors” I should expect there will be clues in his social media activities.

    1. Oh, man, you've gotta watch out for those pinko subversives who help the poor! The next thing you know, they'll be wanting the government to help them too! And all in the name of some hippie peacenik named Jesus.

  3. Plan A: Go to southern NH and visit with cousins from near and far.

Mother Nature (with a chuckle): Have some heavy rain and then some winds of 30-40mph, with gusts to 55mph and, just for good measure, 60-70mph over those mountains you'd have to cross.

    Plan B: Sleep in.

    1. Tidbits from the day which confirm our decision not to drive:

"Route 108 (The Notch) is just about impassable at this point. Multiple cars off the road, and struggling to get up or down. Snowing very heavily. Seek alternate routes if possible."

"Rt 5/Rt 12 Ascutney end in Windsor - tree down, power down, road closed at Rt 44a next to the Running Bear campground."

"Bad accident on 302 almost into Groton. NO THRU TRAFFIC all cars are being turned around. As of 5:50pm"

"242 over Jay Peak was wet and slushy. High winds and snow made for poor visibility"

    1. I'm not sure whether they don't know how to stop it, or don't care to stop it.

    1. Incel was my second guess, although how they get from that to right-wing I don't know. I wonder about two other things, though; for one, I wonder if Florida has the death penalty; for another, I wonder if the killer never made the acquaintance of Rosie Hand and her five skinny daughters.

    2. Holy shit! I'm an involuntary celibate, a goddamn bloody virgin for cripe's sake! But it hasn't turned me into a mass murderer. What is wrong with men?

"I am most concerned about the wealthy owning our democracy. [It] feels as if very real efforts to disable our democracy are underway. Between the way our rights as voters are being attacked, the way elections themselves are being gerrymandered... I really think that if we don't show up in this moment, we will [have] missed potentially our last opportunity to really check this administration."

    1. I have been checking the gnus far more frequently than is necessary.

I see that a story has leaked out that Mr. Khashoggi's body was supposedly dissolved in acid. Skeptical folk have pointed out that would take a long time, which wouldn't surprise me. It would also require a LOT of sulphuric acid, which would presumably have been locally acquired--there wouldn't have been a lot of places they could have obtained it. I have a vague recollection of a serial killer in Chicago (or was it Detroit?) a hundred years of maybe more ago, who dissolved his victims in sulphuric acid, heating them in a big cast iron pot in the back yard. A few teeth were recovered, as memory serves me.

    2. One comes across the idea from time to time. I'm reminded of "Was I Wazir" from Kismet:

      I confiscated his brother
And then did something or other
      Involving his dissolving
      In a vat of lime"

As memory serves, Kismet was set in Baghdad, not Persia, but still...

To be honest,I fully expected the investigation to find that the body had been dismembered, it seeming to me that murderers of the sort involved here would think dismemberment would make the murder harder to trace. Dissolving in acid might well strike such minds as even better, more untraceable. Surely, er, bits would dissolve more quickly and easily than an entire corpse? I gather Mr. Khashoggi was horribly tortured. Anyone who could do that could come up with a sickening yet efficient way of disposing of the body.
