New Sign in Town

  1. Gun Control Is Now a Defining Issue[Click] “Just 22% of self-identified Democrats chose protecting gun ownership rights over limiting gun access, compared with the 76% of Republicans who did.” Hmmmm….The GOP makes up roughly three quarters of one third of the population; adding one fifth of one third (the Dems in favor of gun control) makes about 30% opposed to gun control. That ought to put gun control within political reach.

    1. Fascinating! And it makes perfect sense to build one's home (or village) in a sheltered place.

  3. listener, the cards are on their way to you as of today. I also made a postcard for you to send to whomever you choose. I put a stamp on it.

I have to start a program of weight-lifting again. Not Schwarzenegger type, just 3 lbs. at first. I realized yesterday at the grocery that I'm really struggling to lift a 20 lb. box of cat litter. Which is REALLY weird as I spent May through August carrying furniture! I remember reading some time ago that most women at 80 can't lift 5 lbs. and I was horrified! I don't want that to be me. I want to take names and kick butt until I end.

    1. I have no doubt that you will do exactly that, Susan, and that I shall be cheering you on!

Thank you so much for the cards. Yours may be the first!

  4. More from the Antikythera wreck![Click] “We’re down in the hold of the ship now, so all the other things that would have been carried should be down there as well. Every day is going to be like opening Tut’s tomb.”

    Lynching Memorial[Click] Wow.

Tracing Oral Histories to Solve a Longstanding Human-Migration Puzzle[Click] A long read, but a good one. Old stories passed down can certainly be true; think of the Iceland sagas, of similar age; and the Australian Aborigines' stories that have been validated, going back 10,000 years--300 generations.

  5. Tonight was the meeting of the West Cook (County) DFA. We discussed potential endorsements in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, but put off a decision for a month partially to allow people to gather more information but mostly so we can get more than tonight's 5 people to show up.
