Flowing

  1. The only boss I ever knew who threw a glass ashtray at his secretary was a partner in a Big Eight accounting firm. Was also a screamer. Pretty much had terrorized all the gophers.

Edwin's father was a partner in a different Big Eight.

Do NOT underestimate the volume of anger born by a group universally laughed at.

  2. Okay, I'll confess my ignorance. I have no idea what a "Big Eight" is.

listener, do you want us to address the envelopes to you and then you'll extract and send *just* the cards? How do we do it?

    1. Hi Susan. Thanks for asking. I would suggest just writing "Kimmy" on the envelope and putting it into a slightly larger envelope addressed to me. Thanks so much. ♥

    2. Susan... of course, if you already have Kimmy's address, you can send it directly. I just didn't feel okay about giving it out (of course) and thought getting a package of letters might be easier on the family than getting them in handfuls. Craig and Michelle can open them if they feel a need to double check any, but I imagine they'll mostly let Kimmy do that. :-)

  4. Friends, I share here, with permission, a thoughtful message about guns and the NRA, written yesterday by a woman in my town. I do not yet have permission to use her name, but know her to be a fine citizen. She says it's fine to repost, if desired.

    🌿

My father who was born in 1917, was under Patton in Europe in WWII, and managed to survive his duty as a tank gunner. He had great respect for guns, and was a lifelong patient deer hunter in the Adirondacks. At some time in his senior years, I asked him why he hadn’t put the usual NRA sticker in the window of his new used car. He surprised me by saying he was no longer a member. His reasons were clear: “I don’t like the letters they send me now. They have changed their sportsman focus. I disagree with a lot in their letters. Why are they telling me who to vote for?"
My father was a thoughtful man. I remembered my conversation with him this morning when I turned on the news. I looked up the current NRA through a google link called 'The NRA – Freedom’s Safest Place'. Having just heard about the Nevada mass shooting, I thought “how ironic”. The NRA website was about ‘freedom’ and fear, but it had a little something for everyone.

What has the National Rifle Association become? Greedy for one. NRA's revenues are intrinsically linked to the success of the gun business. Member fees are not even half the organization’s major revenue. Some major gun makers and gun accessory makers donate a percentage of their sales back to the NRA. "Today's NRA is a virtual subsidiary of the gun industry," said Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the Violence Policy Center in 2012. "While the NRA portrays itself as protecting the 'freedom' of individual gun owners, it's actually working to protect the freedom of the gun industry to manufacture and sell virtually any weapon or accessory."

In the 1970’s the CEO of the NRA had a $70,000 salary.

Today the CEO is paid a million dollar salary plus large bonuses.
While the country hashes out Las Vegas for the next many days and weeks, media will be redirected to focus on gun owners who are hunters and firearm collectors, very likely members of the NRA, who will take the heat for incidents of gun violence, rather than the companies that manufacture and market assault weapons. As long as attention can be redirected to a ‘lunatic’ gun user, we continue to stay numb to any reasonable course correction.

  5. So, here's a little pithy Andy Borowitz satire to soothe your souls...

"I'm confused: how is respectful to people who died in a tragedy to not discuss preventing other people from dying in future tragedies?" ~ Andy Borowitz (and most of the rest of America and the World)

"Out of respect for those who died in a fire, now is not the time to discuss installing sprinklers." ~ Andy Borowitz

"It might help focus members of Congress's minds on gun control legislation if we removed the metal detectors from the Capitol building." ~ Andy Borowitz

Sad that this article from 2013 is still true....and that MM is Majority Leader now on top of it.
Lobbying to remove the metal detectors would be an interesting way of getting their attention. Very Erin Brockovich.

If our Congress members cannot at very least ban assault (ASSAULT!) weapons and get us worthwhile background checks, we really do have to throw the bums out next year (if not sooner)!!!
