    1. I suppose we'll give him a pass THIS time, what with being delayed by an act of God and all.

Subject: Pray for Creation on September 1st!

    Dear Cat,

Friday, September 1st is World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, celebrated by the Orthodox Church since 1989 and by the Roman Catholic Church since 2015. It is also the beginning of the Season of Creation, which ends on October 4th, the feast day of St. Francis.

To help you celebrate the Season of Creation we are pleased to share with you the following Covenant-produced resources:

    1) A prayer service series, Finding God in the Wilderness (http://www.catholicclimatecovenant.org/resource/finding-god-in-the-wilderness-season-of-creation-prayer-service-series-2017)to be used on the four Sundays between Sept. 1st and October 4th.

    2) 2017 Feast of St. Francis program, Befriend the Wolf: A Blessing of All Creation (http://www.catholicclimatecovenant.org/FOSF), which can be used on October 4th, or any date of your choosing. The Feast of St. Francis program includes a Blessing of the Animals liturgy.

On Friday, September 1st take a moment to appreciate and give thanks for God’s gifts of nature. Join with Christians around the world praying for creation. Together with Pope Francis, pray for our common home:

    A Prayer for Our Earth

All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.

Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
    O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes.
    Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts
of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature
as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace.

    -From Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’

  3. Gee. I go away for a few days and all kinds of things happen.

Glad the wanderer has returned safely!

    1. You couldn't --GASP!--mean that someone foresaw it! I saw that only 15% of the flooded homes had flood insurance.

    1. Confusing to a non-lawyer. Arpaio's lawyers seem to be arguing that the pardon negates the conviction rather than just abrogating any punishment for it.

    2. At the same time they seem to be arguing that the conviction was wrong to begin with, which would seem to make the pardon meaningless if not invalid.

    3. Sure, the pardon doesn't undo the crime.

On another note I see that the official high temperature here on Monday was 109F, one degree higher than the previous record set in 1924. They say it was 106 on Sunday, but it didn't seem that warm to me. I will admit that working in the sun (with occasional shade breaks) for nearly five hours, from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM was stretching it a bit. Without plenty of water and some balanced salt tablets it certainly would have been too much. It seems the local chain drugstores don't carry balanced salt tablets anymore--the first two didn't know what I was talking about, the third had an older pharmacist who knew what I was talking about but said they didn't stock them any more. So Amazon wins again.

  6. Alan, it comes to my attention that The Nation is beginning or sponsoring yet another new organization, Red to Blue California [Click]. I thought you might want to take a gander at it.
