The Last Rose of Summer

  1. “Under the fundamental rule that no one may be a judge in his own case,” acting Assistant Attorney General Mary Lawton wrote in a brief memo, “the President cannot pardon himself.”
Lawton’s memo is dated August 5, 1974. Nixon resigned four days later.

    1. It looks like Trump has in six MONTHS come close to accomplishing what took Nixon six YEARS. The main thing that I ultimately disliked about Nixon was his nasty streak that was revealed in the tapes. It seems to me that as his time in office progressed, his paranoia increased to a pathological level. I find myself thinking also of Huey Long; he did a lot of good for a lot of people, but in order to do so he had to destroy and replace the existing power structure, first in New Orleans, then in Baton Rouge, which he did. Garnering power seems to have eventually become an end in itself, not merely a means to a greater good. I read that most of the paved roads in southern Louisiana were surfaced during his administration, for one example of the good he did. At this point I can't imagine anyone in the future finding Trump interesting.

    2. I think that, looking back, Trump may be judged the most interesting president in US history. If you wish to take "interesting" in the Chinese sense, please feel free to do so.

  2. Probably another sign of global warming. In the lead story of today's local newspaper, about the big brush/grass/forest fire burning in the mountains north of here, a state fire expert said that it is an example of something that has become more and more common during the past ten years. It used to be that at night, with lower temperatures and higher humidity, the fires would become less intense and spread less rapidly. But now the nights are warmer than before, and the fires often expand dramatically at night.

  3. I am truly enjoying the cooler weather!! Hurrah!! I know you're happy about it too, puddle.

I've been eating so carefully lately, but yesterday I happened to eat some sauerkraut that gave me great discomfort later. At least I think that's what it was. Ah well. Sipping veggie broth today and ginger tea and haven't been too hungry beyond some applesauce, melon and a little plain tuna. Better tomorrow, I hope.

Meanwhile, our good old Maytag clothes dryer is on its last legs. Mah*Sweetie took it apart today (engineers have to do that, they can't help it) and decided it's the motor. Since that's the most pricey part to replace, we decided a new dryer was the best option. The whole while he was investigating it's innards, I was researching new dryers. So, by the end of the day, we purchased a new dryer at Lowe's. It's a really nice LG brand with a window in the door. We've never had a window in our dryer door before, so that will surely humble the cats! Ha!

    1. Our Maytag washer and dryer lasted us more than thirty years; the heating element in the dryer broke once and I could repair it, but a second time and I could not. The washing machine was going too. At the suggestion of our repairman, we purchased what I think is the lowest-end, most economical Whirlpool set (we got them on sale--same time of year Consumer Reports said was best) and have been very well pleased. When the dryer is finished, the alarm is an irritating synthesizer BRAAAAAA rather than the electromechanical bell on the Maytag. Ah, well. I also pine for real sirens on emergency vehicles--they have such a rich sound, even to my poor ears!
