  2. Howard is first. Starting a road trip at stupid o'clock in the morning is last.

We've only barely caught our breath from traveling to Chicago for my brother's wedding.

I saw your message in the older thread, Cat. I do hope we can find a way to get together. Will try to send you an e-mail when it's something like daytime.

  3. Just found time to get back here. Far too much to do and too little time to do it. Just noticed Alan's comment about "soda" and "pop" on the previous thread. The linguistic maps say we called such things "coke" where I grew up. My reaction is "Huh??" We clearly knew that Grapette was not Coke. Nor was Dr. Pepper, for that matter. But I don't recall either of the other two words, so perhaps we did tend to vaguely use "coke" without specifically intending the brand. It still wouldn't have been viewed as a true generic terms for the category, though.

Would be nice if I could find time for a more detailed description of the trip, but I have little hope.

  5. Okay all you soda pop people, what do you call a long sandwich? Is it a sub, hoagie, grinder or gyro? Or?

I grew up calling it a sub, but in one neighborhood of Boston we called it a grinder.

    1. In my family we call it a sub but. around here the locals call it a grinder.

    2. I call it a sub, mostly because I'd never encountered such a thing before Subway opened.
