  3. Hi guys!

Sorry I didn't get here yesterday. Spent some time tinkering with the template at Words & Worlds. It needs a few more minor adjustments but overall is looking better IMO. Then I spent a couple of hours on "World Enough and Time." And then I spent the rest of the bloody night trying to remember how to get the formatting and alignment right on the blog entry. Sheesh! Use it or lose it, really! But it's up and looks respectable.

    3. The log in is a necessary evil. It allows me to share my stuff with my friends while not technically publishing it.

  4. It occurs to me that I never followed up on the situation with Winnie and the prescription dog food that was recommended for her kidneys.

A couple months ago, I had started to look into vitamin supplements that might help, and I stopped into a branch of Jack's Aquarium and Pets. When someone there asked if I needed help, I told them about the kidney problems. The two guys in the store then started searching the web for recommended foods. One man read off the list and the other located the bags of food in the store.

My research to that point had made me aware that "low protein diet" wasn't universally agreed upon as the proper course of action, and that it was more important to avoid things like phosphorus. After looking at various options, the best "bang for the buck" was a brand called Fromm's. It was around $36 for a 33 pound bag.

Once Winnie had eventually gone through that whole bag, I didn't find myself in the vicinity of a Jack's, so I looked through the aisles of a PetSmart to find another name that sounded familiar from that list the men at Jack's were going through. I spotted "Blue Buffalo", which came in a smaller bag and cost at least as much. Recently, Winnie finished that bag, and within the last week I made it back to another branch of Jack's and picked up a new bag of the Fromm's.

I just told Demetrius that I might be imagining it, but it SEEMS like Winnie has had a lot more good days since going back on the Fromm's. Today, he was commenting on the level of spirit and spunk Winnie seems to be showing, and said "If that's the food, you should definitely keep giving that to her!"

Can't say that I've really been doing the sort of rigorous data tracking that would allow me to say with certainty that this particular food has made a difference. But a couple weeks ago, before we had switched back, Winnie was showing signs of depression and having more trouble walking.

Anyway, I'm happy to see Winnie doing so well, at least for now. I don't know if it's the food, but since it SEEMS to be doing the trick, there's no reason to change it.

    1. Renee, that's wonderful! I'm so glad you found something that helps her! The improvement is probably real, just hard to quantify. But if she's happier and more comfortable, that's the real test, not a rigorous, scientific measurement.

  5. Seems like a great idea, Renee. And glad she's feeling better.

  6. It's funny--when we first got Perkins, he happily engaged in the "bite each other on the face" game, which appears to be a favorite of some labs and goldens but not a lot of other dogs. Winnie's favorite way to play is a sort of "mouthy wrassling", in which I am, of course, unwilling to fully engage. Perkins has since developed an extreme fondness for squeak toys, and seems to prefer them to the golden retriever games.

But recently I've found that I can dance around in front of Winnie, rub her vigorously on the sides, and make "ra ra ruh" noises to get her good and worked up, and then pass her off to Perkins. If she approaches him with this level of energy, he is willing to turn his attention from the squeak toys to playing with her.

The things I'm willing to do for my fur kids...

  7. I've been absent, on account of busy-ness. Among other things, tracking Canadian relatives from back when (in cooperation with a living Canadian relative in Vancouver). I managed to locate the land near Toronto that belonged to my great-great-grandfather before he moved west near London, Ontario. AND---I found HIS father's land, as well as the old man's name, which had been forgotten for generations--probably more than 150 years: Johann (then later John) Schultz (changed in the next generation to Shouts). He died (in 1810) when his son from whom we are descended was only seven years old. That takes us back to the 18th century and the first member of the family in North America. We have found three or four sources of confirmation. I think I have a fair shot at getting ownership records of the land parcels all the way back to the original land grants (Crown Patents). WHEEE!!! Their land (and evidently that of some other relatives) was in Buttonville, Markham Township, York County, Ontario. The notable old cemeteries in the area aren't old enough for Johann to have been buried in them, so finding his grave marker is most unlikely. Isn't that something?

P.S.: The influenza has hit here--first cases showed up 1/22, and they really started coming in today 1/26.

    1. Thank you! *hug* Masterly, wow! That will keep me warm for a while, my friend!

After everybody here that wants to looks at it and I incorporate any suggestions, it goes to the SF writers group and, after the same process there, to Trever at Analog. Donno how long the process will take. Gotta re-send Alan's invite and make sure everybody in the writers group is properly signed up, ponder suggestions, rewrite... But we're talking foreseeable future, Springtime at latest.
