  1. Zounds! Howard!

Thanks for the idea on the IRA into annuity plan, Bill. How does the annuity payment interact with the minimum IRA distribution requirement?

puddle--I have found it helpful to have an elastic leg brace handy. I have two, both wraparound one size fits all velcro style, one in the car and one in my suitcase. On my trip to San Diego the other day I used it, to considerable benefit.

Off to the hospital in the early AM, so better hit the sack now. Hasta luego, y'all.

    1. Alan ~~ Since the money is no longer in the IRA, the minimum distribution requirement does not apply. Although the annuity payment will almost certainly exceed the minimum distribution.

This assumes you have used all the money in the IRA to purchase the annuity, as Penny and I have. It's possible to use only part to purchase an annuity. In that case, the amount left in the IRA -- and only that amount -- will be subject to the minimum distribution requirement.

  2. Alan, thanks, been using an ACE off and on: it helps, a lot.

Continuing to improve, and am grateful. Also, 65ยบ and the ice sheet between me and the car is diminishing rapidly. Perhaps tomorrow, I'll venture out to the store. . . .

  3. Alan, realizing every person is different, can you tell me about how many Bloody Marys, downed in fairly quick succession, it would take to get a healthy young man plastered? Call him mid-twenties, about six foot two and slim.

I may not use the info in a written-down story, but the question arose in a fantasy I was weaving for myself in the watches of the night and my curiosity was aroused.

    1. I can answer that, and in researching I made another 5 cents for Disability Pride Parade.

Scroll down to the chart! It depends on how much he weighs.

    2. Thanks, listener. Your googling skills are far superior to mine. I wouldn't have known how to phrase the question for a web search.

    3. That page would be very helpful, only it's all graphics. There's no text for my screen reader to read. Thanks for trying anyway, listener,, especially since you're sick!

    4. How much does your guy weigh? Has he eaten anything recently? Based on the chart, it would be illegal for him to drive after just one, but to be really sloshed he'd probably need 4 or 5. I can be more specific if you give me details. :-)

    5. I was thinking four, actually. No, he hasn't eaten recently, not for at least three hours, probably a bit more than that. Call it four hours to be on the safe side. Weight I don't know about. He's slim but healthy, athletic. For six/two that would be, what, about two hundred pounds? Less? I really don't know.

    6. Spot on! His blood alcohol level would be about .08! (5.0 = death)

  4. Sick Day here. :-( I got coverage at work and stayed home, as I have the symptoms of a mild flu. If I had a fever I'd be sure it's flu. Tummy doesn't like it if I eat, excepting a few mild things, including plain yogurt. My head feels very heavy and I've had headache and am very tired. Took a two hour nap and felt pretty good...for a half hour. Very glad I stayed home today. Super sad that VT*Grand can't come for the planned overnight; but Grandad took her sledding!

    2. yes, hope it's a short bout of whatever it is. Would sound like flu if there was fever.

  5. PhD*Son has been doing aerial birds studies all along the east coast this season. Yesterday he landed the Cessna. "And I didn't even break anything." :-) It's been 10 years since he did that, but he prefers to know how, as a precaution. He says it calms him considerably.

  6. It's kind of ironic that I set these heavy snow photos to post this week, because we are actually in the middle of a January thaw here this weekend! It hit 45F here today and the roof is still dripping as I write. Tomorrow promises upper 40's and rain. I wonder how much snow we'll have come Monday. About half the driveway is showing so far, but we still have a good 6" on the ground (down from 24+". Cold and snow expected to return later in the week.

    1. Us too. Forties for several days. The lows have been in the teens and twenties though, which may be why all the snow hasn't melted.

    2. We've had highs in the 50s. But when you go out in the wind it still feels cold.

  8. That's for you, Cat!

For women the values are higher!

While Mah*Sweetie can drink one serving and get to .02, if I drank the same amount I'd be at .03!

    1. I don't see that chart as saying 4 drinks for a 200-pounder = plastered. I see it as saying 4 drinks = you don't have the judgement or reaction time to drive safely. It looks to me like it would take 7 or 8 to be plastered -- meaning you're dead drunk and everybody knows it.

      Delete
    2. Wow,, listener, thank you!!!

So, let's see. If our guy - his name is Jerry by the way - weighs 180 pounds, four drinks will give him a blood alcohol level of .08. YIKES! Poor boy will have one hellova hangover in the morning.

Next question: Would a girl about five/six, 125 pounds or thereabouts - this would be Connie - be able to get our sloshed Jerry out of the hotel bar and up to his room by herself, or would assistance be essential?

I sure wish I could turn my late-night fantasies into real stories, but they're always too silly. This particular one is about a rising young Pop star and a beautiful and intelligent but otherwise quite ordinary girl who meet and fall in love at a resort he's playing. They're both miserable because each thinks there's no way the other could care. Too silly for words, right?

    3. Ooof, seven or eight! Yikes! That's pretty much a solid night drinking, isn't it? You'd have to be pretty derned unhappy to do that.

      Delete
    4. Well, I don't know. It's easy for some people to drink one after another. And once you've had a few, you can sort of lose track. Could be celebration as easily as unhappiness.

I was thinking about the hangover part because I've never really had a hangover even on the few occasions I've been well and truly drunk. But at least part of the secret is to have plenty of liquid. Bloody Mary's don't have a lot of water to dilute the alcohol.

    5. And to answer the second question: At a blood alcohol of .15 he would still be able to walk, although not particularly straight. So Connie wouldn't have to carry him, just firmly guide him in the right direction.

    6. I vote for 3 drinks, the ability to be mobile with assistance, and a budding romance. :-)
