  1. HD and MLK, Jr are First!!!

Also first are the parents of Christina Taylor Green who donated some of her organs to a young girl in the Tucson area. Just learned that tonight. What an amazing gift given in the first moments of their horrific grief and shock. They said it gave them one more thing about which to be proud of their daughter. Amazing grace.

  2. Hi guys,

Sorry not to have been around yesterday. I was working on songs most of the evening and, hmmm, not doing much else the rest of the day, really.

Anyway, here's something I wanted to share:

Labor joke for the week of January 17, 2011

    Official Notice

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has determined that the maximum safe load capacity on my butt is two persons at one time, unless I install handrails or safety straps. As you are the sixth person to get on my ass today, please take a number and wait your turn. Thank you!

  3. Oh, my! That reminds me of a "cowboy according to OSHA" cartoon I saw close to forty years ago. Bumper and emission control device on the horse, seatbelt on the saddle, and several other safety features that have faded from my memory.

  5. Hi, Cat.

More on Kennedy vs. Nixon dirty tricks, in addition to the old story about ballot box stuffing in Cook County which I clearly recall:

Fascinating story. When you first mentioned more dirty tricks in the Kennedy-Nixon election, I thought it was the story about the reason Nixon never challenged the irregulatities in Chicago (weren't Chicago and suburban Cook County separate election jurisdictions even then?) was because he knew the counting of absentee ballots in California wouldn't stand up to scrutiny either. But no. Something entirely different.

My first reaction was, "I didn't hear anything about Hughes money at the time." But then I remembered that in the fall of 1960 I was in the army in Korea. And not paying much attention to the campaign because the only state where I could have voted was Illinois, where I had lived when I got drafted. But I knew that when I got out I would join my mother in California, so I figured it would be unethical to vote in Illinois.

I never heard back from the maker of that tablet computer, so I went to the Tiger web site anad got a return authorization. The unit is now on its was back. For some reason there was a processing error when I tried to tell Tiger to ship the replacement unit immediately, so it will be shipped after they have got the unit I'm returning. But since I am only about 20 miles from Tiger's national warehouse, UPS ground is effectively overnight. I should have the replacement Wednesday or Thursday.

Penny told me it wasn't a good day to walk to the UPS store because it was sleeting. Apparently she thinks sleet and freezing rain are the same thing. Many of the sidewalks were quite icy, and the better they had been cleared before the icier they were now. Some brick sidewalks downtown were effectively impassible. Fortunately, about half-way there I encounted a very nice colored gentleman who had given up and was walking in the street and who offered me his are the rest of the way. Got to the UPS store safely.Ccoming back I took the EL, even though it was only one stop, then walked in the snow rather than the sidewalk from the station home. So all's well that ends well.

  8. We're having a three dog night here.

It's below zero and getting colder.

There was a house fire two streets over from us tonight and the big house burned to the ground. It was so cold here that the hydrants were frozen and they had to truck water in. The house was fully engulfed when the fire trucks first arrived. Eileen and Dick were not at home when the fire broke out. I haven't heard if they lost pets. I suspect the source was a wood stove as they have a huge woodpile outside. Eileen is a regular at the Library and about 75 years old. I'm so sad for them!! They may be able to rebuild, but how do you replace a lifetime of photos, special clothing, furniture and books, treasures and the little essentials that we take for granted? =Sigh=

  10. They just updated the story online. Eileen and Dick didn't have a cell phone with them, so didn't know for three hours that their house had burned. What a shock was waiting for them when they got home from a night out! Good to see that neighbours took them in. Apparently the fire started in the garage. So sad.
