HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOWARD DEAN!

79th Governor of Vermont

50th Chair of the DNC

1st Always

A clip from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Dean

An early front-runner for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination, Dean denounced the 2003 invasion of Iraq and called on Democrats to oppose the Bush administration. Dean showed fundraising ability, and was a pioneer of political fundraising via the Internet; however, he lost the nomination to Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts. Dean formed the organization Democracy for America and later was elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee in February 2005.

As chairman of the party, Dean created and employed the 50 State Strategy that attempted to make Democrats competitive in normally conservative states often dismissed in the past as "solid red." The success of the strategy became apparent after the 2006 midterm elections, where Democrats took back the House and picked up seats in the Senate from normally Republican states such as Missouri and Montana. In the 2008 election, Barack Obama used The 50 state strategy as the backbone of his candidacy.

Dean was named chairman emeritus of the DNC upon his retirement.[2] He was mentioned as a possible candidate for Secretary of Health and Human Services[3] and Surgeon General under the Obama administration.[4] He currently holds no elected office or official position in the Democratic party.

  2. Alan, thanks for the offer of extra tips on drying persimmons. Not likely I'll meet another one in this lifetime.

  3. Thought persimmons grew wild in Virginia; not in West Virginia? Doesn't make sense to dry them if you have to buy them.

  4. We're prolly too north. Definitely different growing zones.

  5. Most of Virginia is 7, we're a 5 or maybe a 4. . . . (definitely a 4 the first year I was here, lol!) But this site sez they're good to zone 4 ~~ http://www.naturehills.com/product/persimmon.aspx Never seen one, though, wild or tame.

  6. Dang, deleted instead of replied. VA is mostly zone seven, we're mostly five, but were definitely a four the year I moved here. This place sez though that they're good to four: http://www.naturehills.com/product/persimmon.aspx
Never seen any wild ones, though.

    I'd consider drying pawpaws though. . . .

  12. BLUE

The red was a lot brighter in person than it seemed in small version online.
So I have decided to get a blue feather for my hat, instead!

  14. Good solution, and congrats on finding a pretty way to be warm!

  15. :-) Pretty, but even moreso cheap!
The insulated coat is only $69 and I had a $10 coupon.
I had no idear that zippers add so much to the cost of a coat. ;-)

  16. My favorite is a jacket, heavy fleece, two sided, that was virtually my last Wal-Mart purchase in 2001. It cost $20. I keep looking for another one, lol! It's still warm, and except for the mysterious stains is still in quite good shape. I wish I was able to clone it. . . . Maybe I could embroider flowers over the stains, lol!

  17. Applique a little already-embroidered cloth over the area...maybe in the shape of a heart or flower.

  18. It's a world gone wrong...

Last night in front of an audience of hundreds at a presentation at the University of Southern California, TV personality Bill Nye — popularly known as the "Science Guy" — collapsed midsentence as he walked toward a podium. Early indications are that Nye is OK, but what's odd about the incident isn't so much Nye's slight health setback as the crowd's reaction. Or, more precisely, its nonreaction, according to several accounts.

It appears that the students in attendance, rather than getting up from their seats to rush to Nye's aid, instead pulled out their mobile devices to post information about Nye's loss of consciousness...

  19. I read the article, but it doesn't tell me enough to assess what was going on. Was Nye on a raised stage? If so, no one in the audience could really come to his aid -- it would have had to be someone backstage. And in the second incident, they say, "as [Mya] lay dying," but it's not clear he wasn't already dead. Furtuermore, it talks about arms behind his head, which would seem to directly contradict the claim that no one tried to help him.
