  2. It's not the pilots I worry about,
it's the terrorists posing as pilots.

So, sure, let's make it easier for them...

  3. Bill, I too didn't understand why the News Hour report acted like Instant Runoff Voting was some radical new idear. Like you, I've long been familiar with the concept. In my case from the ballots for the Asimov's and Analog readers choice awards. It's not weird or far out or difficult to understand. There's a cute web site that explains it using the Muppets...

Puddle, I fell for it and filled out that survey thingy you tagged me for on FB. Loved your response to "Broccoli?"

  4. Thanks, Cat. Left you a response.

  5. Nope. Disagree on this one: the pilots have the ID, and would be terrorists don't. I really don't want to be a passenger on a plane flown by a pissed off pilot, thank you. They're stressed enough as is. I think flight attendants should skip it, too. AND Denise.

  6. I also disagree. I can imagine a terrorist acquiring fake pilot ID, but what good would it do him? He obviously can't join a cockpit crew to which he is not assigned. And even if he could acquire a fake passenger boarding pass, it's my understanding that when the boarding pass is scanned it has to match the computer record of authorized passengers. Won't work.

What's worse is that your post seems to reinforce the TSA head's bald-faced lie that passengers want their fellow passengers to be "properly screened." What passengers actually want is relief from ever-more-onerous airport hassles. Amtrak reports ridership is up and attributes that to the increasing ease of working (or reading e-books) on the train. That's likely a factor, but I think avoiding airport security is a bigger factor.

  7. Bright, pale blue sky, little white puffies dashing hither and yon. Warmish/coolish (about 50ยบ). AND the 'puter is being wunnerful today.

  9. ROFL! Just saw this (and yes it is a real message) ~

    Lebanon Fire Department:
To all members: Anyone available to assist at the supper tonight, please meet at central station at 3:00 Pm. Thank you.

    I couldn't help posting:
":-) Are you expecting dinner to catch fire?"

  10. By "them" I meant PILOTS!

  11. When you talked about "terrorists posing as pilots," I definitely got the impression that you were suggesting those were (among the) people this would make it easier for. Especially since "terrorists posing a pilots is the grammatical antecedent of "them."

  12. listener, I read your comment the same way Puddle and Bill did, and was surprised and puzzled. I agree with Puddle and Bill BTW. Don't want pissed off pilots. Don't want ever increasing airport hassles.

  13. Presumably one assists at supper in much the same way one assists at Mass, "assist at" being roughly synonymous with "attend." The phrasing does seem a little, hm, old fashioned. And, hey, it never hurts to be prepared.

  14. Is the supper AT the firehouse? OUR hunters' suppers often are. . . .

  15. Usually fund raisers for the Fire Department/EMTs. They also do breakfasts for hunters.

  16. One of the local fire departments has an annual pancake breakfast that is quite the event in the town where it's held.

  17. Was watching James Taylor and Carol King on PBS. Great stuff. I may be forced to buy the DVD of the concert.

  18. Yes. I'm sure it's a fund raiser. But the context was so funny.

  19. Another sort of wasted day. *sigh* Well, maybe I'll do better tomorrow. Gotta keep hoping.

    Good night, friends.

  20. Apropos of a previous exchange, this from

her hidden children," The Rise of Wicca and Paganism in America, chas s. clifton, Altamira Press (2006), p. 91:

"Since the 1970s at least, it has been a commonplace for Wiccan group leaders to insist that persons who become interested in the Craft because of their desire to cast spells must be reeducated to understand that it is first and foremost a religion, even while they admit that the perception of the witch as spell caster, which continues to be reinforced in popular culture, brings many newcomers to the coven stead's doors."
