Hathaway on Rodent Patrol

This gorgeous Barred Owl is, we believe, a female, as she's huge and the females are larger than the males. She returned as sentinel on our fence after a storm. So, I checked in with one of Shiloh's colleagues, who confirmed that Barred Owls hunt rodents and aren't much interested in birds.  This was further confirmed when a pair of White-breasted Nuthatches braved the scene to eat at our feeder.

  2. Deep sigh. I haven't been posting. I thought I was up to speed when I went home from the hospital but evidently not. -- nordy

  3. Susan here. Yeah I'm in good shape! I've been sitting by the stove waiting for the water to boil. Looked at the dial AND I NEVER TURNED ON THE HEAT! Am I a genius or what?

    1. Happens to the best of us. :)

    2. That's probably the real story behind the "waiting for water to boil" cliche!

  4. The CAT scan that was supposed to be looking for kidney stones, unexpectedly turned up fluid around my appendix. They're arranging for surgery. What a drag! Also, no word on the kidney stones.

    1. Yikes, Cat! Fluid around your appendix can indicate acute appendicitis. Best to have that taken care of before it gives you pain. Let us know when it's to take place. Sending you all the best vibes meanwhile!! ❤️

  5. Dad said they're now calling for more snow Wednesday. That's potentially troublesome because Wednesday morning he has a pre-surgery consultation on the cancerous growth on his face.

He didn't tell me what type of cancer it is, only that according to the doctor it is nothing to worry about if caught early. Naturally, we don't want the schedule to be disrupted. But, if there's a significant amount of snow in the morning, he may not be able to get out of the driveway.

I've heard of rain dances. Is there an anti-snow dance? I *really* want him to make that appointment!

    1. It will probably be okay. There's supposed to be snow down your way Weds morning 6:00-11:00am, but only about 1 - 3", so likely not an issue for the roads or driveway. How much did you get with this storm...more like 8"?

    2. Dad guestimates eight to ten.

Thanks for the reassurance. A couple inches shouldn't present a problem.

  6. Hmmm. Looks like Wol has adopted you, or at least your property. Very nice.
