  1. Let's make Juneteenth a federal holiday. January, February and May have federal holidays. I'm in favor of one a month. --nordy

  3. In the couldn't have happened to a nicer guy department:
(AP) — The House Ethics Committee on Tuesday gave an unusual public update into its long-running investigation of Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., saying its review now includes whether Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct. --nordy

  6. Why does Ozempic cost $1000 a month? Senator Bernie Sanders will grill the Novo Nordisk CEO on why Ozempic and Wegovy can cost up to 15 times more in the US than in other countries.
Sanders said the CEO of Novo Nordisk will testify on the cost of Ozempic and Wegovy in September.
He said the hearing would focus on the "outrageously high cost" of the drugs. --nordy

    1. I like the sound of that headline, though 'rebuke' would suit me better than 'scold'. Maybe, someday, the United States will treat Israel like any other country. Well, a girl can dream.

    1. Yeah, that happened here in Vermont. He had some issues, but she was being a real piece of work. I"m so glad that came out. Interesting that they're from the same district.

    2. In the forty years we have lived hereabouts, we have had a total of ONE political door knocker-- a fellow running for city council, at our previous home. This year there has been a remarkable absence of political flyers in the mail; if one didn't follow the news one would hardly know there is an election coming up; I suppose it is in large part because of gerrymandering. Too bad the likes of Vermin Supreme and Lord Buckethead can't get on the ballot here, although I don't know what I would do with a pony. I have noticed that in recent years the political flyers have largely been showing up only AFTER I have voted.

    1. Well written and inspiring. (I'm still not going to travel in places where I don't speak the language. LOL)

    2. I am sure I have previously stated my observation here: there is ONE thing one MUST know when traveling in a foreign country: how to ask where a restroom is. (I once encountered a German-speaking tourist in Yosemite who had not mastered that particular skill; my German was adequate to help her.) If you can ask where the restroom is, you can easily ask where anything else is. Beyond that, the equivalents of "thank you," "what does it cost," "please write it," and "I will take/purchase it" will go a long way toward satisfying basic communication needs. I remember one of my fellow graduate students was going to take a postdoc at the Swiss Federal Technical Institute [ETH] and was apprehensive about his German communication skills; one of our postdocs from ETH told him the only phrase he needed to know was "ein Dunkles" ["one dark"] when ordering a beer.

Wasn’t well enough on the weekend, but still put in 10 hours of hard labor to get the gardens ready for the wicked heatwave. Now we just need to water it as necessary.
