    2. Funny how, even though I am not superstitious, I thought of Friday the 13th today and said a little prayer for all the people in harm's way.

  2. puddle said: “Something else happened while I was in China. We were supporters when I left in 1979, that had reversed when I returned in 1982. Anyone know? It was very visceral for me, and scary.” Here’s my try at figuring it out.

Israeli occupation of West Bank and Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gaza 1967
    Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin 1995
So it wasn’t either of those.

Israeli settlement of the West Bank and annexation of Jerusalem are about right in time.

Begin Doctrine (counter-WMD policy) 1981, by which time it seemed clear that Israel had large numbers of nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them. Note that Menachim Begin had been the leader of Irgun, which was avowedly terrorist.

From Wikipedia article on Menachim Begin: “Begin's government promoted the construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Begin authorized the bombing of the Osirak nuclear plant in Iraq and the invasion of Lebanon in 1982 to fight PLO strongholds there, igniting the 1982 Lebanon War. As Israeli military involvement in Lebanon deepened, and the Sabra and Shatila massacre, carried out by Christian Phalangist militia allies of the Israelis, shocked world public opinion, Begin grew increasingly isolated.”

    1. Thanks muchly. My views had shifted with the 1967 war, so these 1982 events were not top of mind.

    2. A person can't reasonably be expected to remember the details of such things; Wikipedia is great stuff!

  4. Diesel car causes fireball that destroys 1500 vehicles & shuts down an airport [Click] I am reminded of that auto transport ship that caught fire off Holland recently with some Mercedes electrics on board. People were quick to point out the EV’s, but when the fire was put out and investigated, the EV’s proved to have not been involved.

    3. Here it is! [Click] Long story short, Trump claimed that he didn't agree to support the Constitution when he took the presidential oath of office. The Colorado judge wasn't having it.

    5. If he thinks the President of the USA doesn't take an oath to support the Constitution, then we definitely need him to be kept off the ballot!

  6. Sis tells me Trump has pronounced Hamas to be fine people. What is it with him and racist terrorists?

  7. Allow me to suggest that Trump is laying the groundwork for a mental incompetence/insanity defense. Perhaps he does not realize that if he succeeds he will be put into a mental institution until such time as he is cured. St. Elizabeths Hospital, albeit far smaller than it used to be, is still active and greatly improved in recent years.

  9. [huge sigh of relief] I finally got att.net’s fiber optic “upgrqade” installed. They been after me for over a year, but both technicians who came out insisted there was absolutely only one place they could bring the fiber in. And that spot seemed to require moving furniture that no one here could move. Mow AT&T was saying they would discontinue service in December for anyone who didn’t get the new connection. They didn’t want to lose me as a customer, so this time I got a technician who was willing to work with me. I still had to move a bookcase and find a place for the books, but that was doable. The fiber optic modem is installed. No more pressure. And the technician and I had a nice conversation. The new fiber optic modem is supposed to be 50 times faster than the one I had, but for what I do the difference isn’t really noticeable.
