A certain archeologist, who had learned to make stone tools like those of early modern humans, learned (with considerable difficulty) how to make neanderthal-type tools. He discovered that although they didn’t look as pretty, they worked just as well—and importantly could be made faster and more easily. That, taken together with the paucity of neanderthal art, suggests to me that they had a very different esthetic sensibility from ours. —Alan
