In the Barn

  1. Just got up and started making coffee. It's actually cool outside, with a slight breeze, so it shouldn't be terribly hot. Current prediction is 102F, not too hot for some gardening in the afternoon.

  2. What the oil industry seems to have had in mind, if the position of the United States Energy Security Council is to be believed, is that the OPEC monopoly would be replaced, in conjunction with China, with an alternative fuels proram that would involve modification of petroleum powered vehicles. Going with EVs and improving the electric grid as Biden has proposed is not pleasing to the fuels industries.
The membership roster of the USESC is quite impressive.

  4. I'm still a little light-headed this morning; could be from electrolyte loss. Easy enough to figure out---will take a couple of balanced salt tablets.

    1. Maybe a little less gardening at 102ºF is called for?

      Take care, Alan.

Alternatively, if you're so absent-minded you can't remember you've already voted, you shouldn't be voting.

  6. We just refilled our hummingbird feeder, and I noticed possums had been digging for worms in a damp part of the lawn.

  7. My father had long term problems with weight loss, presumably related to his ulcers. I should think that ice cream would not be out of order. Keep us advised.

  8. And if you resort to ice cream therapy, be sure to get the good stuff. And do quality control on it. [grin]

    1. Oh, yes, they don't like thunderstorms, smart critters that they are.

    2. {{{ puddle }}}

We've been having daily thunderstorms. In fact, south of here they had a confirmed tornado (extremely rare in Vermont). But, of course, now we are in Climate Change, and anything is possible.

Tornado touches down and travels 22mi in VT

  10. 60 years ago, yesterday, I got married to the father of my kids. Next year on the date, we went to dinner to celebrate, came home, and I started labor at two a.m., spent today in labor at Providence hospital, Washington, D.C. and my son, AKA Da Boy, was born at 12:30 A.M.

    Tomorrow is his 59th birthday!

It has been a wonderful and enjoyable adventure, watching him raise himself! I wish I could claim credit, but, honestly, he really pretty much did it on his own. And dat's da troot!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KIDDO!

  11. Water well over the bridge. Can't say I wasn't warned, lol! The first day I came to look at the property, in 1995, it had rained somewhere upstream and the ford was uncross-able. Looking at it, consisted of walking up and down the river bank across from what was soon to be my home. . . .

    1. I never like hearing that you have water over the bridge. Especially this week, with the week Vermont has had.
Bernie says it's the worst natural disaster Vermont has had since the Flood of 1927. And he says it's the worst he's ever seen. You take care, puddle. Hear? And have a plan for if it rises to dang high. Love you.

  13. Running about even with deck of bridge. There's an otter in the road going through the litter the river has brought him, eating dinner. Cute!

  15. ‘Hell on earth’: Phoenix’s extreme heatwave tests the limits of survival [Click] I am amazed by the photo of the city’s heat response team delivering water; no hats, dark knitted shirts with short sleeves, and black trousers. I can understand uniforms, but not uniforms that endanger the wearers.

    1. Excellent point.

A friend of mine has been traveling across the south in this heat, across Texas and New Mexico on her way home to southern Arizona (Arid-Zone-a). She has been speaking of it being over 100 every day, and it hadn't occurred to me that that's an issue, because Alan is always saying it's that hot ... and he goes out to garden in it. But it sounds like it's been too hot too long there. Is the planet getting too harsh to live on? What will life be like for my 3 year old granddaughter?

  16. Unfortunately, he won't buy the good stuff, too expensive. But, we refuse to eat the cheep stuff; so, we've compromised on a mid-level brand which is, if not Ben & Jerry's, perfectly acceptable. But, you know, come to think of it, he hasn't been eating ice cream all that much lately. Perhaps some encouragement is in order.

  18. Yes to ice cream.
And yes to resting, not working out in the yard! My goodness.

  19. Here I'm thinking they may already be on strike. We were expecting an "out for delivery" package Thursday and at the end of the day got a notice that it couldn't be delivered, they would try again. Today we were expecting the "out for delivery" package and got the same message at the end of the day. We'll see what comes next.

  20. So, regarding the photo out front ... In the Barn...
That's Eldest's barn and I am beginning to sketch a painting for him and his dear wife. But I'm invoking poetic license. The interior of the barn, shown here, will frame what one sees outside the door of the barn. I will effectively be turning the barn 20 degrees to the left and eliminating the trees in the foreground...so that what one sees out the barn door is what one sees just beyond those trees. A corner of the house will show at left, but mostly one will be looking down the gentle slope of fields to the pond. And on those fields will be some of their horses. And in the barn, in the foreground will be at least one goat looking out, and one of their barn cats sitting on that bench at left.

    1. I just hope it doesn't freak them out to see it that way. Will it feel too strange?
I've been trying for several years to imagine a good angle for painting their 40 acre horse farm and lovely house.
I had thought maybe I'd paint it as looking up at it from the far side of the pond. But the barn and house would be so small and mostly what you'd see is pond and grass. So, it's a conundrum.

  21. (Susan) Cat, here is the recipe for a Wendy's Frosty. 2 c. vanilla ice cream, 4 tsp. Nesquick powder (either chocolate or strawberry, your preference), 1/2 c. milk. I use an immersion blender, but a regular blender or an electric mixer would work as well. Easy to drink and very high calorie (which is why I am avoiding it right now).
