The House has told Kevin McCarthy 6 times that it doesn't want him to be Speaker. But he keeps trying to win over the MAGA Reps who ought to be in jail for insurrection. He has even promised them that instead of a majority of the House just a few of them together can request a vote to throw him out of the Speaker's chair. It's like he wants it so badly he can't think straight.
Well, yes, Bill, I agree accept that the House cannot function without a Speaker. Am I right in thinking new members haven't even been sworn in yet? No committee assignments have been made. No bills have been proposed or moved forward... The work the Congress is elected to do isn't getting done. Alan's quotation from Mankin on the last thread is apposite. And, who's getting hurt? Not the, er, chowder heads. The people who elected them. Indeed, they are getting what they wanted good and hard, but the rest of us are suffering in the meantime.
Well, to put this circus into perspective, or not; Warren G. Harding won the 1920 Republican nomination for president on the tenth - you read that right, tenth - ballot. He went on to win the general election by a landslide. Not that McCarthy is any Warren Harding. After all, Harding freed political prisoners jailed for their opposition to WWI and convened the 1921-22 Washington Naval Conference, which was very successful. During his time in office, he was very popular. It was only after his death that scandals came to light that led to his now being considered one of our worse presidents. And all that is from reading only above the fold on his Wikipedia page.
“Overnight on Wednesday, Mr McCarthy offered a number of concessions including a seat on the influential rules committee, which sets the terms for debate on legislation in the chamber. He also agreed to lower the threshold for triggering a vote on whether to unseat the speaker to only one House member.” Kevin McCarthy makes new concessions to rebels
Wil and I would like to see whomever ends up as Speaker make concessions to the Dems, like being able to bring legislation to the floor, and rescind all the concessions to the right wingers, and so get elected with Dem votes, and those jerks get nothing. That’s how Aaron Sorkin would have resolved this mess!
House Adjourns Again Without a Speaker January 5, 2023 at 8:17 pm EST By Taegan Goddard
“The House of Representatives adjourned for the third straight day without a speaker after Rep. Kevin McCarthy lost his 11th bid for the speakership, even after offering new concessions to hard-right Republican rebels who have deadlocked the chamber,” the New York Times reports.
“There was no clear sign of when the impasse would end, but lawmakers were scheduled to reconvene at noon Friday.”
Saw a meme that reads: "If Kevin McCarthy loses one more time, he wins a free sub!"
I was just thinking that there needs to be a rule that if no Speaker is elected after, say, 20 votes, the Speakership automatically defaults to the former Speaker.
They've just got to stop pandering to the insurrection supporters and choose someone moderate. They'd get a Speaker and it would serve the traitors right.

The Chowderhead Caucus IS pretty big these days.

The question is, if not McCarthy, who? Is there anyone who would be acceptable to both factions? Not that I, personally, care. Let them keep voting.

DeleteI am just as happty to have a GOP=controlled House be nonfunctional. Although there are a few things that will have to get done eventually.

ReplyDeleteHang into your hats…
They’re on the 7th vote and McCarthy likely to lose. But! Matt Gaetz nominated DT…!! 😱😶🌫️
I wondered when/if that was coming.
DeleteIt is about time that some newspaper does an extensive review of the multi-ballot Speaker elections of the 19th Century (and 18th?).

Delete8th Vote done. More of the same. Excepting only that Kevin Hurn got two votes and Byron Donalds got two less.
ReplyDelete9th vote underway. No dice.
ReplyDeleteNo Speaker either.
Prior to this week's votes, 14 speaker elections required multiple ballots, with 13 of those occurring before the Civil War. The only time in the post-Civil War era was in 1923, when it took nine tries. [Click] A pretty good synopsis from CBS. Looks to me more and more like the rules could be changed to require a plurality vote rather than a majority (which has precedent), and Hakeem Jeffries becomes Speaker.
ReplyDeleteSounds good to me.

Wil says McCarthy ought to simply call for a meeting with the Dems to really freak out the right wingers. LOL.
DeleteMaybe instead of running for Speaker, McCarthy should run for the border?
Delete---Alan
LOL
DeleteMaybe the good people of McCarthy's district ought to hold a recall election.
