  1. 'There's just no legal defense': Trump Organization in jeopardy, experts say [Click] Two sets of books, one to show the tax collectors, and another for themselves? Isn’t that called double entry bookkeeping?

    1. No. Double-entry bookkeeping is a system where a credit to one account implies a corresponding debit to another. This minimizes the possibility of inadvertent error.

Vanity Fair: Oops: The Trump Organization Kept Literal Spreadsheets of Its Crimes [Click] Thinking of how the Feds have indicated to Weisselberg that they are prepared to lean on him by indicting at least one of his sons, I can’t help but be reminded of the Wicked Witch of the West: "I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!"

  4. Woohoo! Just got my bloodwork back, and for the first time in 20 years, I am neither pre-diabetic nor diabetic. Want to thank Dr Atkins and those that took his work and made it into Keto, so the products are easily available. I remember just how *awful* Dr Atkins low carb hamburger rolls *were*, with *cold* and *clammy* being the first two adjectives. . . .

  6. Trump exposed as prosecutors make first move in high-stakes chess game [Click] I am reminded that the Controller of the Trump Organization, who would be immediately below Weisselberg on the organizational chart, has testified before the NY Grand Jury. [Click] This surely means that he has turned state’s evidence, because those who testify before a grand jury cannot be prosecuted.

    1. Trump's in La La Land. On the other hand, it might be interesting to watch a presidential campaign conducted from Leavenworth.

    2. Ah, but he would only be the second to do that. Gene Debs ran for President in 1920, while incarcerated in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary.

  7. The unseen covid-19 risk for unvaccinated people [Click]

    Excerpts:

Unvaccinated people are getting the wrong message, experts said.
“They think it’s safe to take off the mask. It’s not,” said Lynn Goldman, dean of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. “It looks like fewer numbers, looks like it’s getting better, but it’s not necessarily better for those who aren’t vaccinated.”

Unvaccinated young adults in Maryland have the same infection rate as they had in the January surge, according to a state analysis. Even worse, the risk of hospitalization among the infected has more than doubled, possibly because of widespread coronavirus variants, said Ted Delbridge, executive director of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems.

Washington state has been publicizing the extreme threat of hospitalization for unvaccinated people. It said unvaccinated seniors are 11 times as likely to get hospitalized than seniors who got the shot. For unvaccinated people age 45 to 64, the chance of covid-19 hospitalization is 18 times higher.

    1. Well, like, yeah! I shouldn't have thought it took a whole lot in the way of brains to figure this out.

Wear the mask. Get the shot. Fail to contract Covid. Guess it's a couple of three steps too long for Trumpers' attention span to manage.

  8. From the Inbox:

    Cat,

On January 6, 2021, former President Donald Trump incited hundreds of violent insurrectionists to storm the Capitol in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election, and other elected officials aided or gave comfort to the insurrectionists. As a result, five people died and more than 140 officers were injured in a seditious attack that shook our democracy to its core. Now, Trump is preparing to run for president again in 2024, holding rallies throughout the summer of 2021 to activate his base.

However, Trump’s incitement of the January 6th insurrection makes him ineligible for any future run for office.

Initially enacted in the wake of the Civil War, Section 3 of the 14th Amendment disqualifies from public office any individual who has taken an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution and then engages in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or gives aid or comfort to those who have. By inciting a violent attack on Congress in an effort to prevent the certification of his own electoral defeat, Donald Trump engaged in insurrection and violated his oath of office.

Free Speech For People is now urging Secretaries of State and chief election officials across the country to follow the mandate of Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment and bar insurrectionists from any future ballot.

Sign if you agree: Secretaries of State must abide by Section 3 of the 14th Amendment and bar insurrectionists from appearing on any future ballot. [click]

It is precisely events like those on and around January 6th for which Section 3 was intended. At its passage, Members of Congress explicitly and repeatedly endorsed congressional declarations rendering specific people ineligible for office. Section 3 is meant to guarantee that the United States will not permit violent insurrections to interfere with the democratic will of the people or the peaceful transfer of power.

In order to prevent future violent threats against our democracy and our Constitution, we must now turn to the States.

Tell Secretaries of State: Protect our democracy. Make clear that Section 3 of the 14th Amendment disqualifies insurrectionists from holding public office again. [click]

    In solidarity,

    Alexandra Flores-Quilty
