Mountain Laurel

  1. Well, the fact that I'm posting this thread just before 3:00am my time, is testament to the length of my day. Sorry to be late to the party. I haven't even checked Vermont's stats yet! But I did spend hours today clearing out piles of stuff and creating a new space for offering spiritual guidance via Zoom.

    1. What's the betting they have another thing in common. They're Trumpsters. :P

    2. Actually, Trump was more or less pro-vaccine. He pushed vaccine development with Operation Warp Speed and made a point of announcing that he and Melania had got their shots.

    3. To whatever extent he favoured the vaccines, he sure wasn't much help.

  3. Very pretty.

Thanks, Listener. I got a vaccinated button, and it's coming from Boston.

  4. Going in for my PT evaluation today with a total stranger. And Carolyn did *not* say, "Don't worry. She's nice. You'll like her." So, I'm rather apprehensive.

    1. Wikipedia: John Brown Day

The John Brown Farm, Tannery & Museum, in Guys Mills, Pennsylvania, holds community celebrations on John Brown's birthday, May 9.[173]

In 2017, the Vermont Legislature designated October 16, the date of the raid, as John Brown Day.[174][175]

In 2016, John Brown Lives! Friends of Freedom celebrated May 7 as John Brown Day.[176] Brown was born on May 9, 1800.

In 1906, the Niagara Movement, predecessor of the NAACP, celebrated John Brown Day on August 17.

    2. From Wikipedia: "It was on April 3, 1865, General Godfrey Weitzel, commander of the 25th Corps of the United States Colored Troops, accepted the city's surrender from the mayor and a group of leading citizens who remained."

So April 3rd would be a good date for "Grant Takes Richmond Day."

    3. That stright-ticket article repeats the idea that the party that won the presidency loses House seats in the mid-terms. But I don't think that applies this time. Typically, a winning president carries a number of House seats with him and some of those are likely to be lost the next time around. But this time Democrats actually managed to loose House seats despite Biden's victory. It looks to me like the vulnerable seats are already gone and there are seats that could well be won back.

  6. Got home about an hour and a half ago. PT evaluation took about an hour and went well, though I'm weaker than I realized. If just the evaluation exhausted me, I dread to think what the actual sessions will do. But it's in a good cause.

Though Sis said Mom was in some distress the whole time we were gone, as soon as I went in to report she was able to focus and ask pertinent questions and express appropriate reactions, if with difficulty. As soon as I turned away to go into the kitchen though, she relapsed. Very distressing.

    1. That is hard to watch, I'm sure. ❤️
It's kind of sweet that Mom feels better when you're there with her, though.

  7. Wonderful news! Engelbert got an MBE in the Queen's birthday honors.

It's been a long time coming. Of course his fans all think it should have been a knighthood. And it's a pity Patricia didn't live to see it. But it's something, and he's soooo pleased.

  8. Congress Votes to Make Juneteenth a Federal Holiday
June 16, 2021 at 7:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Congress on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday, elevating the day marking the end of slavery in Texas to a national commemoration of emancipation amid a larger reckoning about America’s turbulent history with racism,” the Washington Post reports.

“It is the first new federal holiday created by Congress since 1983, when lawmakers voted to establish Martin Luther King Jr. Day after a 15-year fight to commemorate the assassinated civil rights leader.”

  9. The next 4 days promise to be exhaustifying. At least I have the front page all set through midweek, just incase.

Tomorrow begins well, as I will have a (fully vaccinated) friend over for lunch, then we're off to the Shelburne Museum for a couple of hours. Then I head over to Youngest's house to help him paint, until dark.

Friday I have a house to clean and childproof and more sorting of stuff.

Saturday and Sunday (and, I think, both nights as well) we will have Youngest's 3 kidlets here while he and his spouse keep sorting and packing and cleaning. Because...

Monday is the day their Realtor comes to take the 360 photos for their For Sale ads. So the kidlets get picked up around 9:00am. I have a meeting 10:30am to Noon, and another meeting 1:00-3:00, then a home visit from the vet for our two kitties, so they can get shot out of the saddle.

After I get a nap, I'll need to change the sheets in the guest room because VT*Grand is *FINALLY* coming for an overnight on Tuesday!! Whoooo hooooo!!! I can hardly wait!! It's been since before Covid started, and she used to come frequently. As of tomorrow she is FULLY vaccinated, too! Yay!!

    1. Tired as we'll be this weekend with the littles here so long, we are well aware that this may well be their last visit here for awhile. Their house is likely to sell quickly, and before you know it, they'll be moved 3+ hours away down to NH. Sigh.
