  1. OMG, hang onto your hat. This is very scary stuff...

Liane*in*VT posted this tonight. I don't know whether it is real or a cleverly edited compilation. But it is still of intense concern.

    She wrote:
"A new video was released tonight calling for a new coup attempt.

She sent it to: Senator Patrick Leahy, Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Mitch McConnell

She added: "Amazon.com appears to have blocked the parler main site, but not the subdomains. Come on folks!"

You'll need to cut and paste the address into your browser. It's a very scary video of DT calling for a huge coup on the 20th. And it was posted on a parler subdomain. It creeps me out too much to make it clickable.

I couldn't even watch all of it alone. I had to get Wil to watch it with me. It creeps me out! Even if DT doesn't even know about it, for that to be out there in the ether...for people to be plotting this...! And with the "god" aspect nailed into it. That really makes me furious.

It seems too glitzy to be made by DT. At the end it says it was made by Michael Scarboro. The guy should be in prison. But whether DT released it or not...he unleashed it.

    1. After your description I didn't have the heart to watch it myself, but I forwarded the information to my two senators and the editor of talkingpointsmemo.com.

The FBI has “received information about an identified armed group intending to travel to Washington, DC on 16 January. They have warned that if Congress attempts to remove POTUS via the 25th Amendment a huge uprising will occur,” according to a bulletin obtained by ABC Radio.

    4. Thanks, Alan.

Facebook took down the link to the horrible video. Surely, that's just as well!

  6. Heard during my sleep, on the six a.m. news show, that Pence was invoking the 25th. Commented to myself that that show more backbone than I've seen him possess, but good. Dreamed off and on all day about the 25th being detected by scientists in the bloodstream, and kept saying to myself in the dreams that I didn't think how that was done. First thing I did on rising and getting the computer set up and on line, was google it. And sure enough, he's not. Would love to have been proved wrong.

    1. I'm not altogether sure he could if he wanted to. Remember, there are precious few Cabinet secretaries at the moment, mostly acting ones. And most of those are Trump's lickspittles.

The other possibility floating around on CNN, for what it's worth, is that he's basically holding it over Trump's head like the Sword of Damocles.

The House of Representatives is moving toward the second impeachment of Donald Trump and consensus has emerged among leadership that they need to do it fast. They now have the 218 votes needed to get it done, though the week's proceedings could be complicated by the COVID-19 infections that resulting from the Jan. 6 attack, when many Republicans refused to wear masks to protect the colleagues they were sheltering with. If anything slows this effort down at this point, it will be the pandemic.

  9. Our local emailed Front Porch Forum has been bantering about the 51 people who bused from VT to DC for the insurrection. The conversation has largely stayed on the issue of what that trip means given the pandemic. This one today made me nearly spit out my tea!

  13. “Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) is exploring using an obscure, post-Sept. 11-era authority to reconvene the Senate as the House barrels toward a likely impeachment vote of President Trump this week,” the Washington Post reports.

“In 2004, the Senate majority and minority leaders were given the power to bring the Senate back into session in times of emergency, and the senior Democratic aide said Schumer is exploring this option to allow for a potential impeachment trial for Trump to begin immediately after the House transmits the articles to the Senate.”

  14. Hillary Clinton, writing in the Washington Post:

“Wednesday’s attack on the Capitol was the tragically predictable result of white-supremacist grievances fueled by President Trump. But his departure from office, whether immediately or on Jan. 20, will not solve the deeper problems exposed by this episode. What happened is cause for grief and outrage. It should not be cause for shock. What were too often passed off as the rantings of an unfortunate but temporary figure in public life are, in reality, part of something much bigger. That is the challenge that confronts us all.”

What's the 14th Amendment and how does it work? [Click] I don’t see anything in the amendment itself about how insurrectionist members of Congress are to be removed, and I found statements that it has never been used. It seems pretty clear to me that it does not apply to the President.

    1. 14th Amendment, Section 3:
No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

    2. "or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States"

This seems to me to include the President and VP. Plus, it says that "no one who has taken an oath to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same..."

So they can't both support the Constitution and engage in insurrection. They will have to resign.

  16. listener--thinking about that retaining wall at the old mill, I suppose they will have to build a cofferdam, or maybe a sluice to have a reasonably dry workspace. Portland cement can dry under water, but is not as strong or as resistant to being wet as are certain other kinds. The cement used by the ancient Romans became stronger with longer immersion in water, and certain types of cement used in the US before portland cement are similar--and still available in limited quantities.

    1. It is only in the past several years that the secret of Roman cement has finally been discovered. There are slow chemical reactions that continue as it is under water; the old concrete structures at the port of Rome are actually stronger now than they were two thousand years ago. Amazing.

Somewhere I was reading an opinion piece to the effect that McCarthy has been a notable fundraiser for the GOP; and that if fails in that, they have no reason to support him.
