    1. DAVID VALADAO?! He represents a district a little farther up the Central Valley, but is still familiar at least by name. I recall him being rather moderate for a Republican.

  2. Last week’s assault on the Capitol, the Constitution, and our democracy was reprehensible. A violent mob rioted and stormed the Capitol in a futile attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election. They failed. In less than a week, President Trump is leaving office, disgraced and discredited for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. However, Speaker Pelosi’s snap impeachment is absent due process, hearings, witnesses and violates our responsibilities under the Constitution. For these reasons, I could not support it.

    Sincerely,

    Michael R. Turner
    Member of Congress

THIS was the reply I got from my Republican representative. This is the kind of partisan trash that Ohio gerrymandering keeps foisting on us. "Snap Impeachment"? Dude how many armed thugs have to break into our Capitol, breaking windows and smearing feces on the wall. So far 6 people have died, and Turner thinks thinks this was a "snap impeachment". That's why I hardly even try because I know I will get the same old Republican boilerplate talking points in reply. This guy avoids his constituents like the plague. He is disgusting, and I am angry.

    2. Yes, I believe I will. It won't change his mind, but he'll know mine.

  3. I noticed this year that CNN's Erin Burnett wears a particular bright blue blouse when something good is happening. Last week, she wore it when the House was meeting to affirm Biden's win. So she ended up wearing it when all hell broke loose at the Capitol. Tonight, on Impeachment 2.0 Day, she is wearing a bright orange blouse I have never seen her wear before. πŸ˜†

    2. Good Heavens--has the Orange Order been making inroads while we have been distracted by other things? Be on the lookout for politicians wearing bowler hats! [grin--I think!]

  4. National Guard sending TWENTY THOUSAND troops to D.C. over violent threats [Click] Reminds me of this:

“There are more troops right now in Washington DC than in Afghanistan. And they are here to defend us against the commander in chief, the President of the United States and his mob.”
    — Rep. Seth Moutlon (D-MA), arguing on the House floor in favor of impeaching President Trump.

“National Guard units are being told to prepare for the possibility that improvised explosive devices will be used by individuals plotting to attack the Capitol in the days surrounding the Inauguration,” Politico reports.

    1. "There are more troops right now in Washington DC than in Afghanistan..."

Actually, Anderson Cooper just said, "There are more troops in DC right now than in Iran, Syria and Afghanistan combined."

      Let that sink in.

  5. listener--another note for your family ornithologist: this afternoon we saw a single white pelican on the lake in the river bottom. Still quite early, I think for them to be heading for Canada, and we have never before seen a single one. They typically congregate in a small group that from a distance resembles a boat.

Atop the Powerful Budget Committee at Last, Bernie Sanders Wants to Go Big

To the chagrin of Republicans, the democratic socialist senator will play a central role in shepherding President-elect Joe Biden’s agenda through Congress.

  8. President-elect Joe Biden will no longer be taking an Amtrak train to Washington for his inauguration because of security concerns, the AP reports.

    Very sensible.

    2. The symbolism would have been nice, but too risky. I remember Jimmy Carter about gave the Secret Service heart attacks when he walked down Pennsylvania Avenue on the way to his inauguration--which was surely inspired by the Roman law that everyone walked to the Forum, including the greatest public officials.

    3. But what could be more secure than a train? I assume he would have had a private car.

  9. Trump Is Isolated and Angry
January 13, 2021 at 10:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard

“When Donald Trump on Wednesday became the first president ever impeached twice, he did so as a leader increasingly isolated, sullen and vengeful,” the Washington Post reports.

“With less than seven days remaining in his presidency, Trump’s inner circle is shrinking, offices in his White House are emptying, and the president is lashing out at some of those who remain. He is angry that his allies have not mounted a more forceful defense of his incitement of the mob that stormed the Capitol last week.”

“Though Trump has been exceptionally furious with Vice President Pence, his relationship with lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani, one of his most steadfast defenders, is also fracturing… Trump has instructed aides not to pay Giuliani’s legal fees.”

New York Times: “White House officials have started blocking Mr. Giuliani’s calls to the president.”

    1. I expect that losing his megaphone and seeing his businesses headed into the toilet are very considerable factors, not to mention his political problems and legal exposures. But I don't think he has the strength of character to exit like Goebbels; this could turn out more interesting than anticipated. The only analogous situations that come to my mind are ones involving being on the losing side of a real war. Well, we shall see within the next few days, I suppose.
