    1. I think I read that in one or two states early voting started this past week; the pace picks up next week.

  2. Cooler this morning--57F they say. Visibility seems less--more than a mile but less than two, I'd estimate. The sun is completely invisible (at 0730). The smell of smoke seems a bit less, and the air quality index is down to a reported 102.

    1. 102 is an improvement, isn’t it?

The cooler temps must be due to so much smoke blocking the sun. How will your raisins fare?

    2. Yes, it is an improvement; I think it was 130-something yesterday. Now (11AM) the overcast (whatever it is composed of) is thinning; one can only look at the sun for a moment, and it is strong enough to dry the raisins, which we just put out.

    3. 1PM: The haze has thickened some, and the sunlight decreased.

  3. Making Joe Biden Cool [Click] “Young people aren’t particularly excited about Joe Biden. One strategy to change their mind? Convince them that they’re voting for a big, progressive crew.” Not convincing for me, but I’m an old guy.

    1. Not convinced at all. But there is a better chance for progressives with Biden than with the alternative.

    2. That's certainly a good bet.

  4. California Republicans are turning on Trump, poll finds [Click] From a month ago, but still interesting. By the Berkeley IGS Poll, which is the best in California.

  5. I saw a headline that DT is doing better than he was in the electoral surmising. Wasn’t able to read it at the time. Have you seen anything about that?

    1. I think I saw and read that; it didn't impress me. Sounded like overinterpretation of limited data.

  9. It seems that our new squirrel [Click]
shower [Click] is working; there is no sign of squirrel activity in or around the persimmon tree they were harvesting.

  10. Have you had the opportunity to see it in action?

    1. No, only circumstantial evidence that it has been active. Like no squirrels and damp dirt under the tree that doesn't seem to have been from the regular sprinklers. I strongly suspect that the squirrels got to the peach tree (and could get to the other persimmon tree) at the other end of the yard by climbing up over the bluff at the same place, so we can protect several trees with one shower. The water combined with the sound of the Rainbird-type sprinkler is startling if one is not suspecting it--even if one is not a squirrel.

    2. Maybe I didn't answer that well. In the course of setting it up there are multiple adjustments. The diffusion of the water spray, how long it goes on, how far it sprays, alignment of the detector, etc. In the course of doing all that one gets a number of demonstrations of how it works. We haven't seen it activated by a squirrel, but I am pretty sure I have it set right for that job.

    3. I was wondering the same thing!

      Hi Renee! 🙂

  11. I moved the raisins into the garage (which requires moving the car out and then back in), which took from 4:50 to 4:55 PM. There was a definite smell of smoke; I regretted not using my N95 mask. The sun was a dim orange-pink ball which faded noticeably during those five minutes. It took me maybe another three minutes to turn off the water to the squirrel shower (they seem to be active from around 1PM to 4PM), and when I had done that the sun had brightened a bit, so there must be clouds of smoke drifting by. There were about eight cars at the house next door, and at the end of the street there must have been twelve or fifteen. Politics being what they are around here, I suspect gatherings of the unmasked. On the other side of the street, about three houses down, there is a camping trailer (not big by the standards of today) that appeared about three days ago; refugees, perhaps?

  12. I made a quick run to the grocery store for some cornstarch, and saw one house in the neighborhood that seemed to have an unusual number of cars in front, and on the next cul de sac a large camping trailer I had never noticed before set up in front of a house.
