    1. I have serious doubts that Trump received many votes in Bolinas.

  5. The Infection That’s Silently Killing Coronavirus Patients [Click] Long story short: get yourself a pulse oximeter—it is just as important as a thermometer for dealing with Covid pneumonia and getting medical attention in time to avoid being put on a ventilator.

    1. Pulse oximeters are evidently flying off the shelves. Lowest price for ones not shipping direct from China about $19, mostly $35 to $75. The $19 ones are out of stock on Amazon; on eBay I found them in stock in Los Angeles, delivery by April 30th. Price direct from China less than $5 on eBay. Out of stock at CVS and Walgreens, noncompetitive prices at Walmart.

    2. Alan, what brand did you decide on? How did you decide? For ur purposes, does it matter whether we get a $19 model or one that's closer to $50?

    3. I got the $19 one for delivery 4/30; price and availability (I also glanced at the reviews). I figure they all must work the same way, and are made from the same components, and all in China. I didn't investigate the delivery time or delivery charges on the ones from China. That might bear investigation if only the $35 and up versions are available. I figure the more expensive ones simply represent profiteering (some are obviously identical to ones that sold out at $19). We discussed whom we might give the oximeters to--people at high risk of complications with whom we have bonds of family or close friendship. I have over the years purchased several things directly from China, and have not had any problems.

    4. The ones that have reviews posted have so few single-star ratings that I figure those are posted by people who are not using them correctly. [Clipping them onto the finger upside down?]

  8. A while back, Neil Sedaka posted a "Medley to Brighten Your Day." It must have been quite popular, because he decided to give a mini concert of two or three songs every day for the duration. He's on Facebook, though without the blue checkmark, and on YouTube at Neil Sedaka Music. For myself, though it has been a short time, I find myself looking forward to the mini concert every day, and it really does lift my spirits. Of course if you don't like his music, it won't do much for you. But it's a grand thing to do. It probably helps him feel somewhat less helpless.

  9. More and more meat processing plants close. [Click] Numbers of cattle, hogs and chickens exceed what remaining plants can use, so farmers may have to slaughter and bury them; finished product is rapidly rising in price due to demand, while frozen reserves are only about enough for a week. Meat packers’ profit margin has shot up, and they are increasing workers’ pay to compensate for absences due to fear of coronavirus. The whole meat supply system will crash soon. I suppose we will be eating a lot of casseroles. And at the same time dairies are dumping milk they can’t sell. A house of cards.

I am so grateful for local farms and meats here in Vermont.

    1. The virus has eight genes; it lacks virulence factors associated with flu variants of recent years. The 1918 virus has mutations in TWO genes that give it its remarkable virulence.
