  1. A little while ago (it's 10PM here) we noticed something I saw once before, around the same time of night. A boat with a powerful light, working its way along the river and the lake below our house, which connects to the river. The previous time I looked with a pair of field glasses, and it sure looked like they were searching for something, in the water and in the brush alongside the river. I wonder if it might be a sheriff's search and rescue team training to look for people swept away by rivers. (This river isn't swift--it has few drownings--but there is another river in the southern part of the county that is swift.) The sheriff has a gun range a mile or two downriver from here.

  2. Intriguing! Might be worth a phone call tomorrow to inquire.

  3. Just some quick notes, no links. gotta run.

    From politicalwire.com:

A new NPR/PBS/Marist poll finds Bernie Sanders leading the Democratic presidential field nationally with 31%, followed by Mike Bloomberg at 19%, Joe Biden at 15%, Elizabeth Warren at 12%, Amy Klobuchar at 9%, and Pete Buttigieg at 8%

A new Monmouth poll in Virginia, which votes on Super Tuesday March 3, finds Michael Bloomberg and Bernie Sanders tied at 22% each, followed by Joe Biden at 18%, Pete Buttigieg at 11%, Amy Klobuchar at 9% and Elizabeth Warren at 5%.
Another 11% of likely primary voters remain undecided and do not lean toward any candidate at this time.

Los Angeles Times: “Michael Bloomberg has spent more than $124 million on advertising in the 14 Super Tuesday states, well over 10 times what his top rivals have put into the contests that yield the biggest trove of delegates in a single day. The only other candidate to advertise across most of those states so far is Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has spent just under $10 million on ads for the March 3 primaries.”

Nate Silver says there is no evidence in polls of a ceiling on Bernie’s support.

  4. Michael Bloomberg qualifies for Democratic debate stage for the first time. Personally, I'm looking forward to actually seeing and hearing Bloomberg rather than just reading about the huge amount he has spent on TV ads.

  5. The biggest primary race in Cook County is for State's Attorney. Controversial incumbent Kim Foxx has just been endorsed by _California_ Senator Kamala Harris. Somehow it's become a national race. (I believe Our Revolution also endorsed Foxx.)

    1. Clarification: Bernie's approval ratings are not just higher than those of his competitors, they are exceptionally high by any standard.

  7. Listener, on the last thread you opined that the Dems shouldn't have let Bloomberg join the race so late. But you forget his multi-billions. As Neil Diamond observed, money talks.

    1. More to the point, the Dems have nothing to say about it. This is a matter of state law.

    1. I was struck by the fact that the two California polls give such widely different results.

    2. It's probably down to different sampling methods and turnout models.

  10. Made good progress with my five-color woodblock prints this morning; quite educational. Finished pruning our tangelo tree; a lot of work because the part I was pruning (the very top of the tree) was definitely not easy to reach with the pruning hook, even standing on an orchard ladder--getting the prunings out of the tree was also not easy. But it's done now.
