Red Barn, early evening

  1. Trump Is Going to Burn Down Everything [Click] The complete original looks to be significantly more [ahem] assertive, but is mostly behind a paywall (at The Daily Beast):

Excerpt October 3, 2019 at 9:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Rick Wilson: “In private, Republicans are in the deepest despair of the Trump era. They’ve got that hang-dog, dick-in-the-dirt fatalism of men destined to die in a meaningless battle in a pointless war. They’ve abandoned all pretense of recapturing the House, their political fortunes in the states are crashing and burning, and the stock-market bubble they kept up as a shield against the downsides of Trump—’but muh 401(k)!’—is popping.”

“You want to know why so few Republicans have held town-hall meetings since early 2017? Because Trump is the cancer they deny is consuming them from the inside out. They see the political grave markers of 42 of their GOP House colleagues—and several hundred down-ballot Republicans—booted from office since 2017 and know that outside of the deepest red enclaves, they’re salesmen for a brand no one is buying.”

“I have some bad news, Republicans. It never gets better. There is no daylight at the end of this tunnel. Trump is a suicide bomber, and you’ve strapped yourselves to him so tightly that when he explodes, you’re going out to meet the 72 porn stars of the Trumpian afterlife with him. (Spoiler alert: They all look like Ivanka.)”

    2. And the irony is that odds say Biden will not be the one running against Trump.

    1. The Guardian has a pay wall.

    2. No, they have a request for support that pops up on the bottom of the page, but can be cleared with a click, or a "cookies OK?" display that can also be cleared with a click. They have a no-paywall policy, although they do rely upon contributions.

    3. X in a circle at the upper right corner of the "please make a contribution to keep The Guardian online free of charge for all" overlay closes the overlay. Maybe that's off screen on a smartphone?

  3. A very timely book: The Impeachers [Click]

Biden announces $6m ad buy in four early states. [Click] Warren recently announced a $10m buy in the same states.

Kamala Goes Small In Iowa [Click] This does not augur well for her Presidential prospects. Neither do her latest California poll results (8%).

Doesn’t sound good… [Click] Fox News; scroll down to the part about the new encrypted text messages they got their hands on.

Getting medieval: impeachment's roots go back to 14th-century England [Click] The article omits mention of the impeachment and subsequent execution of Charles the First. But the idea of limiting the monarch’s power by impeaching ministers was mooted not long ago in the case of Trump. Well, after Trump and then Pence, President Pelosi can clean house and get it ready for the next elected President.

  4. Adam Serwer: The Mad King’s Enablers [Click] “As Trump’s demands grow ever more erratic, democracy rests on the willingness of bureaucrats to ignore the democratically elected chief executive.” Certainly not news, but well put.

  8. Bits from CNN:

DT's State Dept people actually drafted a document in August, which would have committed Ukraine/Zelensky to investigating the Bidens.

There's a quid pro quo with China as well, because DT said he would not speak out against China's handling of the Hong Kong protests if China were to investigate the Bidens...!! Warren got mentioned to China as well.

  9. CNN reporting on Volker's 9 hours of testimony today:

"Volker urged Ukraine's leadership not to interfere in US politics in a conversation that followed the phone call between President Trump and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky, according to two sources familiar with the testimony.

"Volker's testimony behind closed doors seems to confirm the whistleblower description in the complaint that Volker and another US diplomat "provided advice to the Ukrainian leadership about how to 'navigate' the demands that the President made."

"In the interview, Volker told lawmakers that the Ukrainian government had a lot of questions about why the military aid was being held up and he did not have a good explanation, according to the sources describing the testimony.

"Volker also testified that the Ukrainian government was concerned that a meeting with the Ukrainians and Trump was being put on hold but did not understand the reason."
