Flour Sack Cloth

Hand-painted in Maine, the cloth was a birthday gift
which immediately came in handy, to cover over Wil's puzzle-in-progress
during my spiritual guidance meeting!

  1. The whistle-blower's report has been declassified
and may be released Thursday morning.

So, how are you sleeping now, Susan?

    1. No, actually I'm not sleeping better. Mikel Jollett said "There is no anger like that of a narcissist losing control of a story about himself. This is going to get UGLY". Yes, it will and dangerous for us as well. Did you see that yesterday trump *announced* that Nancy Pelosi is no longer Speaker of the House - as if he has any say in the matter. He's freaking out big time and he is at his most dangerous now.

    2. Yeah, I did see that.

And, yes, he isn't likely to resign as Nixon did. Rather a malignant narcissist will dig in and go ballistic. As I've said from the start, I just hope he doesn't go nuclear. But at least at this point, lots of eyes are focused on him.

He not only said Nancy Pelosi isn't the Speaker anymore, he demanded to know who gave information to the whistleblower, because he wants them punished. He's losing it.

His days are numbered. Sleep on that.

Joseph Maguire, the acting Director of National Intelligence, will testify in front of the House Intelligence Committee at 9 a.m. ET.

The whistleblower complaint has now been made public. [Click]

Playbook: “The Democrats’ goal is to understand what the White House and DOJ did to block Congress from getting the whistleblower’s complaint and IG report, and why. Was there a cover-up? Who ordered what, when, why and through what channels?”

The three major broadcast networks have switched to live coverage of the hearing, demonstrating the historic nature of this hearing.

    1. Will the White House and Cabinet staff members suddenly discover a need to spend more time with their families? Or at least a whole bunch of them?

  3. Notes from elsewhere:

The complaint cites President Trump’s call with Ukraine’s president, efforts to hide the call records inside the White House, concerns about Rudy Giuliani from many U.S. officials and an abrupt stoppage of foreign aid, among other things.
    ====================
“According to a person familiar with the content of the complaint who spoke to Just Security, when the call was over, senior White House officials pulled the verbatim transcript out of the system that it is traditionally stored on and moved it into a separate system reserved for extremely sensitive/highly compartmented programs.”

    Cover Up

This is far bigger than Watergate, especially as it involves a foreign power.

And using the code-word protected computer system to hide the information!
And this was not the first time this system had been used this way...!
Now I know why Speaker Pelosi spoke of keeping a narrow focus. It could be huge and unwieldy!

  10. NYTimes reporting that DT wants staff to tell him who gave information to the whistleblower, speaking of punishment for spies, and calling it treason. He thinks that "treason" means doing something against HIM.

A whistleblower is supposed to have protection against retaliation. And what about those who spoke up?
The sh!t is hitting the fan.

  13. I just now read the article about Bernie's waffling on war and peace, and here's what I think, for what it may be worth.

The real world is complicated. Sometimes you have to defend yourself. Sometimes you have to help your friends defend themselves, and sometimes you have to defend those who are too weak to defend themselves. Both on the level of individuals and on the level of nations, some bullies, psychopaths and the like simply do not respond to coaxing, reasoned negotiations and the like, but only to force. Of course nonviolent means are always preferable. But sometimes such means don't work. And when they don't, it is necessary to back up threats with action.

In the real world, too, it is not always easy or even possible to know in advance whether force will work in limited doses or whether it may need to be sustained. Nor indeed is it always easy to know exactly what action will work. It is also an unpleasant but unavoidable fact that political, economic or other realities may influence the decision of whether to take violent action and what violent action to take.

In other words, blanket pacifism is neither desirable nor possible except maybe for the armchair legislator. There are times when military intervention is, in fact, necessary. The trick is in recognizing these rare cases and knowing when to rely on nonviolent interventions. Unfortunately, Bernie's only human, and he can't always call these things accurately.

Do I agree with every decision listed in the article? No. For one, I thought the bombing of Kosovo was wrongheaded. At the same time, I am not a U.S. Representative or Senator. I do not have access to all the intelligence and other data they have access to. It seems to me that Bernie, like every other rep. and senator, does the best he can to balance a number of competing and even contradictory imperatives. Do I always agree with his decisions? No. Is he always right by some abstract criterion? No. Is he perfect? No. But I trust him to use the brain God gave him and always to try to do what is right, or at least, what is least wrong. I can't say that for everyone currently in Congress or in government as a whole.

    1. Sure. I get that it's an imperfect world. And I truly believe that Bernie is a good and honorable person.

What I don't accept is that it was somehow the right move to place F35s in Vermont's largest city. ALL of Vermont's delegation supported doing so! I do NOT understand that and to date not one of them has explained why. In fact, none of them ever met with the city council where the jets are based. I'm really pissed about it.

  14. Here's a nice little tidbit, in case you missed it:

“In the hours after the release Wednesday of the rough transcript of President Trump’s July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the White House circulated an email with proposed talking points for Trump’s defenders,” the Washington Post reports.

“Unfortunately for the White House, the email was mistakenly sent to not only Republicans but also Democratic lawmakers and their staff.”
